Doctor Aphra issue 36 represents the thirty-sixth installment of the canon comic book series, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, which began in 2020. Alyssa Wong penned this issue, while the artwork was provided by Minkyu Jung, Jethro Morales, and Rachelle Rosenberg. Marvel Comics released it to the public on September 27 of 2023.

The variant cover artist E.M. Gist became involved with the Star Wars: The Clone Wars 15th anniversary cover program after requesting to illustrate a cover featuring Cad Bane. This opportunity was granted on the condition that he create three additional covers for what he came to know as the 15th anniversary series. Gist's second cover allowed him to depict another of his cherished Star Wars characters, Ahsoka Tano, which became a variant cover for Doctor Aphra (2020) 36. Gist also revealed that he managed to "sneak" Morai into the cover's design, making this cover her inaugural appearance within the realm of comic books. He also showcased a preliminary sketch that was ultimately unused for his cover design.
