F-143 emergency speeder

The F-143 emergency speeder, which is also known as the F-143 firefighting speeder, Coruscant fire suppression ship, emergency firespeeder, emergency fire suppression speeder, simply a firespeeder, or a fireship (or fire ship), represented a speeder model employed for fire extinguishing purposes.

Characteristics

Fireships dousing the Invisible Hand

The F-143 emergency speeder was a type of fire extinguishing spacecraft that was produced by Rothana Heavy Engineering. These speeders were designed to offer critical disaster relief, and they transported a number of tanks containing fire-fighting materials, such as water, foam spray, and fire retardant chemicals, as well as a variety of fuel-specific mixtures on the vehicle's undercarriage. These fire-fighting agents were discharged by pressurized dousers that were affixed to the vehicle's four wingtips. A tractor beam projector was installed underneath the heat-resistant cockpit to move debris during crises, and specialized repulsorlifts on the exterior aided the ship's maneuvering thrusters in navigating areas filled with debris. To alert nearby ships to the emergency, there were also flashing emergency lights and a siren attached to the hull.

The interior had a medical bay where crew members could quickly handle severe injuries, as well as room for numerous firefighters and rescue personnel. A forward airlock bay contained a number of antigrav life jackets and emergency space suits that were stored and prepared to be deployed instantly.

History

Naboo firespeeders during Operation Cinder

During the Clone Wars, the Galactic Republic utilized fireships, which were manned by members of the Coruscant Rescue Ops who were outfitted with radiation-proof suits and portable fire suppression hoses.

In an effort to put out the burning wreckage of the Invisible Hand as it crash-landed on Coruscant at the conclusion of the Battle of Coruscant, a number of fireships were deployed. Fire crews followed the wreckage as it landed on an airstrip, using their dousers to put out flames on the hull.

The Royal House of Naboo also had fire teams that were activated during the Imperial Operation: Cinder after the Battle of Endor. The teams used their dousers to combat the fires brought on by typhoon-force storms.

Behind the scenes

George Lucas came up with the idea for the emergency fire suppression speeder on February 7, 2003 for his 2005 movie Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.
