Endurance-class fleet carrier
The Endurance-class fleet carrier functioned as the central component in New Republic fleets, which were comprised of New Class warships.
Characteristics
Sporting a Class 1 hyperdrive, the Endurance could transport 1,600 soldiers and enough consumables to last for five months. However, space for additional fighters necessitated a reduction in weaponry. Endurance-class fleet carriers possessed only a secondary array of armaments, including twelve turbolaser cannons, twenty laser cannons, eight ion cannons, and four tractor beam projectors.
While they benefited from enhanced hull integrity, their shields were noticeably weaker. Despite being outfitted with a powerful anti-starfighter system, these fleet carriers typically relied on escort vessels and starfighters for protection. Their intended role was not direct combat, but rather the deployment and coordination of smaller spacecraft.
The primary offensive capability of an Endurance-class ship resided in its complement of nearly four starfighter wings. One wing was a short-range strike force composed of K-wing bombers and Defender starfighters for close-quarters support. Another wing was a long-range air superiority force consisting of hyperdrive-equipped fighters like E-wings, A-wings, and X-wings.
History
The introduction of fleet carriers signified a shift in the Republic's military doctrine. In contrast to the Imperial Navy, which emphasized larger, heavily armed warships such as the Imperial-class Star Destroyer, the New Republic opted for smaller gun platforms, with starfighters assuming a more prominent role in projecting power.
Adhering to New Class principles, the Endurance-class fleet carrier shared a fundamental hull design and systems with the Nebula-class Star Destroyer—though this shared design obscures the fact that the Star Destroyer was apparently designed first, as part of the Defender project, so that the Endurance-class could also be seen as a Star Destroyer variant with heavy weapons replaced by extra fighters, similar to the earlier Venator-class Star Destroyer.
Beyond its role as a starfighter platform, the Endurance also served as a command vessel. Task force commanders and fleet flag officers frequently utilized these carriers as their flagships. Admiral Areta Bell commanded from the lead ship of the class, Endurance, during the Orinda campaign in 12 ABY, until its destruction by the Imperial Remnant during the Battle of Orinda.
Behind the scenes
Until recently, the sole official visual depiction of the Endurance-class fleet carrier was sourced from the RPG supplement Cracken's Threat Dossier. Unlike some other designs from the New Class Modernization Program supposedly based on common hullforms, the carrier's image bore a reasonable resemblance to the Nebula/Defender-class Star Destroyer. The differences included a sizable saucer section atop the bridge tower on the Endurance (potentially representing the carrier's command ship role) and a second, smaller tower located at the ship's front. The description of the carrier in Before the Storm has often been misinterpreted, with fat-hulled being mistaken for flat-hulled. This error makes it somewhat easier to reconcile the CTD image.

More recently, a new image of the Defender-class Star Destroyer (now retconned to being the Nebula-class), has been provided by Starships of the Galaxy, portraying a much sleeker design completely lacking a bridge tower.
A new image of the Endurance-class fleet carrier has appeared in the Essential Guide to Warfare. This image is similar to the image of the Nebula-class Star Destroyer that appeared in Starships of the Galaxy.
