Publisher's Synopsis

The destiny of the galaxy will soon rest on the shoulders of a young boy, though he is currently unaware of this. Anakin Skywalker, who is growing up on the desert planet Tatooine, never imagined that he would go beyond his humble existence. He should only be concerned with the simple pleasures of boyhood. But destiny has other plans...

Plot Synopsis

Tatooine, a planet located on the galactic frontier of the Outer Rim, orbits near the inner edge of the binary stars Tatoo I and Tatoo II. A Jawa clan is seen looting a downed starship, while a group of Tusken Raiders observes them from the cliffs above. While one Tusken watches the Jawas through electrobinoculars, two others study a poster advertising the Boonta Eve Classic podrace. The Tuskens then ride their banthas and follow the Jawas toward Mos Espa, a spaceport settlement.

Anakin Skywalker, a slave boy, is working under a large bin using a fusioncutter in Watto's junkyard, which is owned by the Toydarian junk dealer. A womp rat is watching him intently. The womp rat then triggers a trap, causing Anakin to hit his head in the ensuing chaos. Amee arrives and notices the trapped womp rat. Anakin frees the womp rat, stating that all living things deserve freedom, and then resumes his search for parts for his secret podracer. The two then notice a herd of banthas that are unusually close to the settlement, which Anakin believes is due to an approaching storm. Anakin tries to return to the shop before Watto yells at him, but he encounters the womp rat again, which is sitting on a shiny energy binder. Surprised, Anakin examines the device, as he usually knows where to find things in Watto's junkyard.

Watto interrupts Anakin's inspection by yelling in Huttese, which forces Anakin and Amee to go inside the shop. Watto orders Anakin to get a thermal veristat and Thruster relays from the visiting Jawas, and he scolds Anakin for wrecking his podracer in the last race. Watto threatens to beat Anakin until he is blind, but Anakin retorts that he would not be able to race if he were blind. Watto reminds him that he doesn't have a podracer to race anyway and then sends Anakin away. Anakin then meets his mother, Shmi Skywalker, who asks him to buy fruit from Jira on his way. He asks her to hide his new energy binder and then heads to the plaza.

As Anakin walks through the crowds, he is approached by his friends Kitster and Wald. Wald has obtained a peggat that Kitster hopes to use to buy a ruby bliel. The boys stop at Jira's stall and learn that her cooling unit is broken. She gives Anakin some pika fruits for his mother, and Anakin promises to find a replacement unit in the junkyard. They then head toward Maggy the Gorgon's, but they come across Sebulba, the Dug, in the street. Sebulba is scolding his band about his entrance music for the podrace. Sebulba taunts Anakin about his crash in their last race, and Anakin accuses his rival of cheating and killing Rimkar, another racer. The two confront each other and are about to fight when a cantina patron is knocked through the doorway of Maggy's, which interrupts them. An old spacer, who knows Anakin, dismisses Sebulba and warns the slave boys not to enter Maggy's today. Instead, he gives them a ruby bliel to share. Anakin asks the retired pilot to tell him about the Angels of Iego again when he returns. Anakin vows that he will become a deep-space pilot and visit all the planets one day. As Anakin catches up with his friends, a Duros asks the spacer why he bothers talking to the slave, to which the old human replies that there is something special about Anakin. The two laugh and go back inside Maggy's, where Gasgano, the Xexto podracer, is in the middle of a violent bar brawl. Gasgano forces his opponents to praise his Ord Pedrovia podracer, and he is bitten by a Gran. Meanwhile, Aldar Beedo and Wan Sandage are negotiating a deal to eliminate Sebulba from the race, while Ark Roose watches Skywalker from the window, plotting his revenge against the boy.

Anakin's dream

Meanwhile, Anakin and his friends find the Jawa traders, but they arrive just in time to see a pit droid buy the parts that Skywalker needs. Back at the shop, Watto is angry with Anakin and makes him clean the bins again. Anakin gives his mother the fruit from Jira, and Shmi looks at her son, briefly fearing that she might not see him again. As she sends him off, Shmi warns Anakin about the approaching storm.

In the junkyard, Anakin finds the womp rat he saved again, now standing on a cooling unit. Anakin sits on it happily and looks up at the sky, spotting a ship coming in at high speed. Anakin wonders if it was an Angel and dreams of one leading warriors into battle on countless planets. He imagines himself as a Jedi, wielding a glowing lightsaber as chained hands reach out to him pleadingly. However, Watto's voice startles him from his vision, and he arrives at the shop to find that Watto has visitors: Qui-Gon Jinn, Jar Jar Binks, R2-D2, and the beautiful young Padmé Naberrie, whom Skywalker sees as the Angel from his dreams.
