Plot summary

To properly honor the spirit tree, Chief Chirpa and Logray must leave the village for a day. Chirpa decides to draw a name at random, granting the winner temporary leadership. The result makes him uneasy, and he hesitates to announce the chosen Ewok. After repeated inquiries, he reveals that Teebo is the one. The other Ewoks burst into laughter. Teebo, distracted by a butterfly chase, overhears his name being called. Rushing to find out what's happening, he stumbles over his butterfly net. The Ewoks' laughter intensifies, with one commenting that Teebo couldn't even guide them out of a berry patch with a map. Teebo, bewildered, admits that he always saw himself as a follower, but Chirpa stands by his decision.

With the tribe leaders gone, Teebo seeks guidance from Princess Kneesaa. She advises him to ensure the village operates smoothly and to earn the villagers' trust to establish his authority. He then notices Brador struggling with his unruly bordok and impulsively slaps the animal's rear. The startled bordok bolts, wreaking havoc by tearing through laundry, crashing into a hut just as an Ewok is showing it to his partner, and shattering pottery. The Ewoks chase after Teebo, but Wicket and Kneesaa intervene, pleading with the mob not to harm their friend. The others insist on locking him up before he causes further damage. Teebo escapes on his hang-glider, contemplating whether to simply fly around until Chirpa and Logray return. Suddenly, an unfamiliar probe droid collides with his glider, sending it crashing into the bushes. Teebo remains hidden, waiting for the danger to pass.

The probe droid pinpoints the Ewok village, and aboard Zornak's spaceship, captain Zornak unveils his scheme to enslave the Ewoks using obedience stones. He teleports to the village, where he encounters Wicket and Kneesaa, posing as a harmless traveler seeking hospitality. He offers them necklaces adorned with the stones. While Kneesaa declines the gift, Wicket urges her not to offend their guest. Once they put on the stones, they become blindly obedient to Zornak, and soon, everyone in the village is wearing the stones, allowing him to capture them.

Teebo returns to the village to warn everyone of potential danger. Finding it deserted, he fears that his leadership has driven everyone away. The probe droid reappears, and Teebo, realizing its connection to the disappearances, takes off on a new glider to follow it.

The droid halts in Crystal Valley. Teebo observes Zornak's henchmen directing the hypnotized Ewoks as they transport gems to the spaceship. He is enraged by the enslavement of his friends. The probe droid approaches him again, and Zornak's forces realize that one Ewok remains free. Instead of searching for Teebo themselves, they order Wicket to capture him. Compelled to obey, Wicket pursues his best friend through the forest with a stun weapon. Teebo is unsure of what to do until his hood snags on a branch. An idea strikes him, and he climbs a fruit-bearing tree, leaving his hood on the bush as a decoy. He calls out to Wicket, who fires at the bushes, and Teebo drops a fruit on his head.

When Wicket regains consciousness, Teebo assures him that he holds no grudge and shares his plan. He places the obedience stone back around Wicket's neck, effectively taking control of him. They return to Zornak's spaceship, where Wicket, following Teebo's instructions, places an obedience stone around Zornak's neck. Teebo then commands the alien slavedriver to release the captured Ewoks and depart from Endor immediately. The villagers express their gratitude to Teebo for saving them, which surprises Chief Chirpa and Logray upon their return. As they watch Teebo being carried by the cheering villagers, Logray remarks to Chirpa that he would have been out of a job if they had stayed away for another day.
