F-143 emergency speeder

The F-143 emergency speeder, alternatively called the F-143 firefighting speeder, Coruscant fire suppression ship, emergency firespeeder, emergency fire suppression speeder, firespeeder, or fireship (also styled as fire ship), represented a speeder model employed for fire extinguishing purposes.

Characteristics

Fireships dousing the Invisible Hand

The F-143 emergency speeder was a fire suppression vessel produced by Rothana Heavy Engineering. Created to deliver critical disaster aid, these speeders had a number of tanks filled with fire-fighting substances like water, foam spray, and fire retardant chemicals, along with various fuel-related compounds on the vehicle's underside. These fire-fighting agents were deployed via pressurized sprayers attached to the vehicle's four wing ends. A tractor beam projector was installed beneath the heat-protected cockpit to move wreckage during urgent situations, and unique repulsorlifts on the outside aided the ship's maneuvering engines in navigating through debris fields. The hull also featured flashing emergency lights and a siren to alert nearby vessels to the emergency.

The interior featured a medical area where crew members could rapidly address severe injuries, as well as space for numerous firefighters and rescue personnel. A front airlock bay contained several antigrav life vests and emergency space suits ready to be deployed instantly.

History

Naboo firespeeders during Operation Cinder

During the Clone Wars, the Galactic Republic utilized fireships, manned by members of the Coruscant Rescue Ops who wore radiation-resistant suits and wielded handheld fire suppression hoses.

Numerous fireships were activated in an effort to extinguish the burning remains of the Invisible Hand as it crash-landed on Coruscant at the conclusion of the Battle of Coruscant. Fire teams followed the wreckage down to an airfield landing, using their sprayers to put out flames on the hull.

The Royal House of Naboo also maintained fire squads, which were deployed during the Imperial Operation: Cinder after the Battle of Endor. The teams used their sprayers to combat the fires caused by storms of typhoon strength.

Behind the scenes

George Lucas conceived the emergency fire suppression speeder on February 7, 2003 for his 2005 movie Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.
