Dream

Grievous dream General Grievous has visions of a previous life, before his transformation into a cyborg. Dreams constituted the images, thoughts, and feelings that individuals underwent during sleep. Those attuned to the Force occasionally experienced prophetic visions within their dreams, though the true nature and intent of these visions often remained unclear.

Typically, the act of dreaming occurred during the specific phase of sleep referred to as REM sleep.

History

Darth Vader's dream shows his late wife and the dark side of the Force battling for control over him.

Two notable instances of Force-related dreams include Anakin Skywalker's haunting visions of his mother's death on Tatooine, and his wife, Padmé Amidala's, demise during childbirth. These dreams were pivotal in Skywalker's descent to the dark side, fueling his intense desire for power to prevent the deaths of his loved ones.

As Darth Vader, he experienced a dream where his deceased wife wrestled with dark side entities for dominion over him.

General Grievous occasionally had dreams of his past, recalling the era before he was transformed into a cyborg and assumed the role of Supreme Commander of the Droid Armies within the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Within these dreams, he would relive prior triumphs and battles from his time as a Kaleesh warlord.

Anakin Skywalker recalled that his mother, Shmi, "experienced frequent waking dreams, unsettling and peculiar... which, as a child on Tatooine, had frightened him somewhat." The young Anakin also had his own dreams; some resembled nightmares, while others portrayed him as a Jedi.

One of Anakin's waking dreams involved him being trapped inside a strange, ancient cube that he had acquired (through dealings with Watto) from an elderly Jawa on Tatooine. The cube displayed images of two Jedi Knights dueling with lightsabers, a volcano, a starmap leading to a specific moon, and a lamp pierced by a knife (symbolizing forbidden knowledge). The remaining sides appeared to have ancient writing in an unknown language, worn away over time. The cube lacked openings, locks, or hinges, but Anakin sensed something "evil" within, and that it could somehow be opened.

In his dream, Anakin inexplicably found himself inside the cube, as if it were a vast, inescapable room. He pounded on the walls and cried for help, but to no avail: "Help me get free!" Then, he heard a mysterious voice emanating from within the cube: an "evil voice" whispered that no one could help him, that he alone must open it. When the boy asked how, the mysterious voice responded: From the inside. Upon waking, Anakin heard the same ominous voice lingering in his ears, convinced that it had been more than a dream, as the voice seemed to originate from above his bed, from his cubbyhole, where he had stored the cube. "Did you talk to me?" he asked the cube in the dark. Yes. I called to you. "Are you trapped in there? ... How can I let you out?" The voice returned: From the inside.

Anakin eventually realized that he himself was trapped, unable to free himself. However, he also understood that if liberation were to occur, it would have to originate "from the inside." Anakin also noted that the cube was "warmer than the night air" and that living creatures emitted heat.

Just days later, Anakin had another waking dream—again, extremely vivid, but also grand and "full of hope"—in which "a tall man with intense eyes, wearing a poncho" and carrying a lightsaber, had come to rescue him from Tatooine.

Coincidentally, just before Anakin met Qui-Gon Jinn and his group, he had a grandiose dream featuring a radiant, glowing white figure (presumably an angel) wielding a lightsaber against a backdrop of space, surrounded by shadowy humanoid figures prepared for battle in a galactic war. In the same dream, he saw himself wielding a blue lightsaber that closely resembled the one he would later construct.

After meeting Qui-Gon and his companions, Anakin experienced another variation of the same dream on the night before Boonta Eve. This time, however, he recognized the angel: he again envisioned planetary wars, armies of droids, "the rumble of transports and tanks, the hum of laser weapons." But leading them all was "a mighty queen"—the angel from his recurring dream. Anakin realized that this queen was, strangely enough, the same girl who had accompanied the Jedi to his home.

After entering the Jedi Order to begin his training as a Knight, Anakin continued to experience dreams, but they grew increasingly dark. By the time Skywalker reached 18, his dreams had become more intense than ever, primarily manifesting as disturbing visions of darkness and distorted memories of his time as a slave. He longed to erase his experiences as a slave and grew increasingly concerned about the safety of his mother, Shmi. Nine years had passed—along with numerous interstellar missions—since Anakin had promised her that he would become a Jedi Knight and return to Tatooine to free her, and he remained determined to fulfill that promise. On one of his last missions before the Clone Wars, Padawan Skywalker experienced one of his most intense dreams. He dreamed that he was back on Tatooine as a fully trained Jedi apprentice. He encountered the protocol droid he had built, C-3PO, and returned to Watto's junkshop, where he found his mother abandoned, huddled in weariness and fear in a small cage. His desperate attempts to free her were futile, and he awoke in a feverish sweat, hearing his own labored breathing as if through a respirator. Tragically, fate would lead the 19-year-old Jedi back to his homeworld in 22 BBY to discover Shmi brutally held captive by Tusken Raiders. After Shmi died in his arms, young Skywalker suddenly found himself immersed in his dark visions as he sought revenge on those who had taken his mother's life.

Zuckuss, a Gand bounty hunter, sometimes experienced what he identified as visionary possibilities within his dreams. Shortly after the Battle of Hoth, Zuckuss suffered a respiratory attack on the Mist Hunter and fell asleep afterward. He dreamed that the mists obscuring his future had cleared enough for him to see the potential paths branching out before him.
