Flame beetles were a type of beetle that inhabited the planet of Kashyyyk. These creatures fed on indigenous flora, transforming the digested material into a notably flammable substance. This process resulted in their distinctive bioluminescent abdomens. They possessed the capability to ignite these chemicals instantly when near a foe, or as a final act upon their demise.
During Cal Kestis' mission to Kashyyyk in 14 BBY, he faced numerous flame beetles that attacked him. He eliminated a significant number of them to proceed with his objective.
The initial appearance of flame beetles within the current Star Wars canon occurred within the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The species's origins are found within the Star Wars Legends timeline, initially featured in the 1984 comic book Star Wars (1977) 91, authored by Mary Jo Duffy with illustrations by Tony Salmons.
