Plot summary

Following their diplomatic mission to Keyorin, Lando Calrissian, Han Solo, and Chewbacca journey to Kashyyyk, Chewbacca's native planet. Upon arrival at the spaceport just outside Chewbacca's hometown, the trio heads towards Chewbacca's residence, hoping to reunite with his wife and son. However, en route, they are intercepted by an enigmatic pale warrior who has allied himself with Chewbacca's brother-in-law, Vargi. The warrior identifies himself as "Knife," a moniker given to him by the local Wookiees due to their inability to pronounce his actual name. Knife and Vargi propose that the group proceed to Chewbacca's abode for refreshments. Upon reaching the house, they discover it deserted, causing Chewbacca considerable concern. Lando and Han attempt to reassure their companion, suggesting that his family is likely out shopping and will return shortly. The group enters Chewbacca's dwelling to enjoy drinks and await the family's return. As Lando and Han express their misgivings about Knife, Chewbacca's son, Lumpy, appears at the entrance. Lumpy is accompanied by three Wookiees, who menacingly display their weaponry towards Han, Lando, and Chewbacca. These rogue Wookiees are employed by Knife, who reveals that he is holding Chewbacca's family captive and intends to revive the Kashyyyk slave trade. Han initially believes that Knife is affiliated with the Galactic Empire, but Knife asserts that he has no connection to the Imperials.

Knife confines his three new prisoners using binders and leads Chewbacca out of the premises. Knife intends to parade the Wookiee hero through the city as a means of demoralizing any resistance to his slave trade. Han and Lando are held captive inside the house while Knife decides their fate. As Chewbacca is escorted outside to witness his people being loaded onto transports, Lando and Han manage to break free from their confinement. Han liberates Chewbacca from his restraints, but he is intercepted by Vargi, who inflicts a brutal beating on Chewbacca as punishment. Han intervenes, only to become the target of Vargi's aggression. Han is rendered unconscious, but not before Chewbacca intervenes, initiating an uprising against the slave traders. As Chewbacca and Vargi engage in combat, Knife attempts to suppress the rebellion, preparing to eliminate Chewbacca with one of his blades. However, Lando, having just rescued Chewbacca's family, shoots the weapon from Knife's grasp. With his family now safe, Chewbacca delivers a series of powerful blows, swiftly defeating Vargi. The momentum of the battle shifts rapidly, and as the Wookiees celebrate their triumph, Knife manages to escape. Han attempts to pursue their adversary, but Knife manages to commandeer Lando's vessel, the Cobra, and flees offworld. Han expresses his frustration at Knife's escape, but vows to orchestrate a rematch with the enigmatic figure at the earliest opportunity.
