Plot summary

Following the events that transpired on Shawken, Luke Skywalker, Plif, Rik Duel, Chihdo, and Dani are urgently traveling back to the forest moon of Endor so that Kiro can receive medical attention. Simultaneously, Leia Organa and Mon Mothma have come back to Endor after the events that unfolded on Herdessa. Leia observes as Kiro is taken from the Moonshadow and moved to intensive care. As evening approaches, Luke and Leia engage in a conversation about the future they are building. Leia expresses her concerns about the shift from a rebel force to a new governing body for the galaxy. Luke offers reassurance to Leia, while also cautioning that they must exercise great care moving forward, as the truth about their parentage must remain a secret. Neither of them intends to make a public announcement that Darth Vader was their father.

After concluding their discussion, the pair decides to visit Kiro, who is finally on the mend. Kiro awakens to find Leia and Luke looking at him. The three of them talk about what happened on Shawken, including the destruction of the Shawken Device. Luke inquires as to how Kiro knew how to disable the device, eventually deducing that Kiro has a connection to the Force. Kiro makes a request to Luke, asking him to train him as a Jedi so that he might become a Jedi Knight. However, Luke declines, stating that he is not yet prepared to take on apprentices. Kiro becomes upset by this news and shouts at his friends. Feeling dejected, he asks them to leave him alone. In other news, the First Conference of Free Peoples has commenced, presided over by Admiral Ackbar and Mon Mothma. Both are eager to lay out the key elements of a new galactic government. As the conference begins its discussion on the foundation for the Alliance of Free Planets, Mon Mothma points out that those who are not present will lose their voting privileges.

Returning to Luke and Leia, the two are in conversation about Kiro's situation, as the Iskalonian has been ignoring them, choosing instead to spend time with Rik Duel and his associates. Rik has been gambling with the local soldiers, amassing a significant sum of money. However, one of the soldiers, Crin, grows frustrated with his losses and draws his blaster pistol on the Corellian. A minor altercation ensues, and Chihdo is shot, falling from the treetop village. Luke is able to use the Force to safely bring Chihdo down to the ground, but the card game becomes a source of increased tension. A violent gunfight is averted when Luke steps in, disarming Crin. Rik, enraged by the attack on Chihdo, demands that Luke kill Crin. Despite Luke's lack of intention to kill the wayward Rebel, Kiro intervenes, asserting that Luke is a trustworthy friend with good intentions and that the group should not be fighting amongst themselves, as they are all allies in the Rebellion. Kiro realizes that he must be patient with Luke and that he can still learn from his friend, even though he has refused to train him in the Force. Meanwhile, the First Conference of Free Peoples has concluded. Mon Mothma informs Admiral Ackbar that Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and Han Solo have forfeited their right to participate in governing the new government due to their absence from the meeting. Ackbar replies that this outcome might be for the best.
