The Foreign Intruder Defense Organism, also known as FIDO, was a massive battle droid deployed by the New Republic in 11 ABY.

Details

The FIDO was devised by the renowned Mon Calamari Admiral Gial Ackbar and brought to life by a team of leading Mon Calamari scientists. It was intended to guard the entrance to a bunker, fortress or safe house.

Description

From a distance, the FIDO resembled a large krabbex. It consisted of an eight-meter-long pod attached to four-jointed legs.A thick plasteel shell covered its pod. It carried a sensitive long-range sensor and an advanced motion detector. The FIDO's primary weapons—its 26 claw-tipped cables—were stored in the pod and unspooled through a central grid. Its legs anchored the FIDO securely once a strategic location had been selected and provided no mobility.If the FIDO's controller were camouflaged, the sensor and cable grid had to remain partly exposed. The FIDO was sufficiently sophisticated and intelligent to distinguish ally from enemy and was well programmed in battle tactics. Its controller directed the action through protected sensors at each tentacle's edge and could adapt to new situations.

Armament

The FIDO's main weapons consisted of 26 claw-tipped cables, each capable of extending to about 100 meters. These cables were modeled on the mouth tentacles of the krakana, a predator native to Dac, the Mon Calamari's ocean homeworld. Each cable ended in razor-sharp pincers made from solid plasteel, capable of slicing through transparisteel and even the armored hull of an Imperial Juggernaut.Because these cables were the FIDO's only weapons, it had to rely on surprise in combat, thereby reducing "friendly fire" and collateral damage. When properly installed, the FIDO would remain undetected by enemy forces until it was too late to turn back. At that point, countless durasteel cables would seize them and destroy them by hurling them about or tearing them to shreds.

History

The Battle of Anoth

The first unit saw deployment during the Battle of Anoth in 11 ABY, opposing Imperial Mountain Terrain Armored Transports commanded by Ambassador Furgan of Carida, who sought to kidnap the youngest son of Han and Leia Organa Solo, Anakin.In the battle, the Foreign Intruder Defense Organism faced eight MT-ATs. The FIDO unit destroyed four before being overwhelmed by fire from the remaining spider walkers. Although Furgan destroyed the FIDO, Leia and Terpfen defeated him, bringing a major threat to the New Republic to an end.

Later years

After the battle, the New Republic started producing additional FIDOs, though only in limited quantities. To keep others from stealing the design, the New Republic Intelligence classified its blueprints as Category Red information.

Behind the scenes

Author Kevin J. Anderson has explained that FIDO's name referred to the FidoNet Star Wars Echo, an online message board in which he participated at the time.

The Spanish translation of Champions of the Force retained the acronym by naming the droid O.D.I.E.
