Despite feeling the audition wasn't successful, he later received confirmation of his casting. Kelly then researched the film, known as "Redcup" at the time, and discovered its connection to the Star Wars universe. Although a Star Wars fan in his youth, he hadn't watched any films released after Disney's acquisition of the franchise from George Lucas in 2012. Kelly chose to avoid watching the newer films to develop his own unique portrayal of the character. He and his mother went to Pinewood Studios to shoot his dialogue scenes, and he is credited as "Eager Scrumrat" in the film. The movie premiered on May 25, 2018.
