The Galactic-class battle carrier represented a capital ship utilized by the Galactic Alliance Navy around 40 ABY. Its design originated sometime following the conclusion of the Yuuzhan Vong War.
This class of ship bore a resemblance to the Imperial-class Star Destroyer, serving as its intended replacement. It possessed an approximate length and a similar command tower and bridge arrangement atop its hull. However, it exhibited a broader, more blunt shape and a tonnage exceeding that of the older vessels by one and a half times. The Galactic-class appeared to feature multiple hangars, with the forward-port-flange starfighter hangar, comparable in size to a sports arena, accommodating four and a half squadrons.
Despite being regarded as a contemporary, sizable Star Destroyer, the designation "battle carrier" was intentionally chosen to avoid evoking memories of the Imperial regime's symbols of terror. Furthermore, the lead ship of the class was named the Dodonna, in honor of Rebel hero Jan Dodonna.
It was noted that the Galactic-class occupied a different size category compared to the Strident-class Star Defenders belonging to the Corellian fleet, a type of vessel it encountered during the Second Galactic Civil War.
In Legacy of the Force: Betrayal, where it was first introduced, the Galactic-class battle carrier is described as being "just as long" as an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, implying a length of approximately 1,600 meters. However, its widened hull suggests a significantly larger warship overall.
The designation of Dodonna as being in a larger "size class" than the Strident-class Star Defender has led to some debate, with some fans suggesting that the Strident-class vessels should be considerably larger than the scale indicated for the battle carrier. This assumption, however, relies on a complex interpretation of canon and may not be accurate. Conversely, the size of Dodonna directly influences the perceived size of the Star Defender. Some fans have observed that the key line of dialogue stating that the Corellian fleet has "nothing in the size class of Dodonna" could be interpreted as indicating that the Strident-class ships are, in fact, larger than the battle carrier. While this contradicts the scene's intended meaning, it could potentially serve as the basis for a retcon. It is also conceivable that Galactic-class vessels could share the same length as Imperial-class Star Destroyers while being significantly wider or taller. This would allow the Strident-class vessels to be longer than an Imperial-class Star Destroyer yet still smaller than the Dodonna.
