Eta-5 interceptor

The Eta-5 interceptor, a spacecraft utilized by both the New Jedi Order and the Galactic Alliance Navy, was a specific type of interceptor. Its service extended to at least 40 ABY. This craft, a product of Kuat Drive Yards development, descended from the Eta-2 interceptor and was also classified as an A-wing.

Characteristics

Kuat Drive Yards engineered the Eta-5 with a wing configuration reminiscent of its predecessor, the Eta-2. However, its overall hull design aligned more closely with that of A-wings, featuring solar panels affixed to struts extending from the fuselage's midpoint. The interceptor featured a tight cockpit equipped with rocker-arm seating. Powered by twin ion engines, it boasted exceptional speed and maneuverability, although its armor was light and its shielding minimal. Armament included dual fire-linked concussion missile launchers, twin laser cannons, and sophisticated computer-assisted targeting systems, granting the Eta-5 substantial offensive capabilities against smaller capital ships. Its wedge-shaped hull led some pilots to refer to the Eta-5 as an A-wing.

History

In the year 40 ABY, Wedge Antilles's daughter, Syal Antilles, piloted this very model under the alias Lysa Dunter upon enlisting in the Galactic Alliance military. Joining VibroSword Squadron, which operated from the Galactic-class battle carrier known as the Dodonna, she served as VibroSword Seven during Operation Roundabout at Corellia before the Second Galactic Civil War began. However, she was compelled to leave the squadron due to questionable Corellian activities, resulting in her reassignment as a pilot for the new Aleph-class starfighters.

Rhysati Ynr flew an Eta-5 during Lando Calrissian's endeavor to prevent the destruction of Kessel. She briefly loaned it to Wedge Antilles, who showed interest in flying it. Wedge subsequently utilized the fighter to safeguard the Millennium Falcon from an energy spider.

Behind the scenes

The Eta-5 interceptor debuted in the 2006 novel Legacy of the Force: Betrayal. In the 2007 novel Star Wars: Legacy of the Force: Legacy of the Force: Fury, Syal Antilles reflects that her combat experience has been limited to "A-wings and Alephs". Because she had seen battle in Eta-5s and Alephs in Legacy of the Force: Betrayal, this references the fact that the Eta-5 was, in part, derived from the earlier RZ-1 A-wing interceptor from Incom Corporation and was also a descendant of the Eta-2 interceptor. This implication is continued in detail in the 2009 Fate of the Jedi novel Fate of the Jedi: Outcast, which describes the Eta-5's appearance as being akin to an A-wing fighter, with solar panels mounted on struts that protrude from the fuselage's midpoint.

The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia notes that the New Jedi Order also used the Eta-5, though no source has ever shown this.
