The nine-installment book series, Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi, picks up the narrative two years following the events chronicled in the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force series. This series represents a collaborative effort by Aaron Allston, Christie Golden, and Troy Denning, structured in a repeating pattern mirroring that of the Legacy of the Force series. Initially, Karen Traviss was slated to pen three of the books, but Golden took her place due to Traviss' demanding writing commitments. A series of tie-in eBooks by John Jackson Miller, entitled Lost Tribe of the Sith, delves into the history of the Lost Tribe of Sith introduced in the Fate of the Jedi novels. The series was initially known as Star Wars Odyssey, a title inspired by elements of the saga that echoed the adventures of the legendary Greek hero Odysseus.
Del Rey books made available a complimentary preview reference book, Fate of the Jedi: Dramatis Personae, on StarWars.com before the release of Outcast, the series' inaugural book.
The following statement about the Fate of the Jedi series was included in the Random House spring catalog PDF:

THE FUTURE BECKONS...
'Two years have elapsed since the demise of Darth Caedus. Natasi Daala, as Chief of State, has guided the Galactic Alliance into an era of unprecedented tranquility. Now, the entire galaxy stands on the brink of embracing the very lasting peace that Jacen Solo once sought to impose as a Sith Lord.
In this new epoch, Luke Skywalker grapples with challenges to his authority over the very Jedi Order he established. Following Jacen's descent into darkness, a significant portion of the galaxy perceives Jedi Knights as unpredictable and perilous soldiers, deeming them too dangerous to operate without constraints. This viewpoint is shared by Chief Daala, who has pledged to either bring the order under governmental oversight or dissolve it entirely.
However, the most formidable threat to the Jedi remains concealed—a nameless adversary even more deadly and treacherous than the Sith who have plagued the Jedi for millennia. Awakened by Jacen Solo during his five-year journey, this lurking danger emanates from the galaxy's darkest recesses, assailing Jedi Knights in ways that even Luke has yet to comprehend—but which he must swiftly counteract if he hopes to salvage the New Jedi Order.
