The supermassive black hole known as the Galactic Centre resided in the middle of the galaxy, specifically within the Deep Core region. Every star and all other matter in the galaxy revolved around this point. The immense forces emanating from the Galactic Centre caused the stars in the Deep Core to be in perpetual motion, which in turn resulted in the hyperlanes of that region changing on a daily basis. Despite its position as the physical center of the galaxy, the planet Coruscant in the Core Worlds served as the focal point for astrogation and galactic coordinates.
Located at the heart of the galaxy, inside the Deep Core, was the Galactic Centre, a colossal black hole. This singularity was the pivot point around which the entire galaxy, with its approximate 400 billion stars, spun. With gravitational effects exceeding a thousand stars, the Galactic Centre attracted, crushed, and consumed all nearby matter, light, and energy, resulting in endless plumes of gas spiraling into its depths. These forces from the Galactic Centre disrupted the very structure of space, creating disturbances that spread outward from the black hole into the Deep Core.
Though its effect diminished with distance, the black hole's power influenced even those stars that were far enough away to avoid being pulled in. Consequently, the Galactic Centre induced constant shifts in the positions of stars within the Deep Core. This continuous stellar movement led to daily alterations in the region's hyperlanes, rendering travel in the Deep Core a perilous endeavor that necessitated constant route recalculations.
Despite the Galactic Centre representing the true center of the galaxy, the Core World of Coruscant, located at a considerable distance from the black hole, rose to prominence as the galactic capital. It was assigned the coordinates 0,0,0 due to its role as the de facto center of the Galactic Republic, and therefore became the reference point for astrogation mapping.
Not long after Hazram Namir, a soldier, enlisted in the Rebel Alliance's 61st Mobile Infantry, a fellow rebel trooper named Gadren instructed him about the nature of the universe, including the black hole residing at the galaxy's center. Namir remembered Gadren's words during the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY.
Within the new Star Wars canon, the Galactic Centre received its initial mention, albeit indirectly, within the Guide to the Galaxy section of Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine, specifically in its thirty-fourth issue published in 2015. Its identification occurred later in the Guide to the Galaxy section of the series' thirty-sixth installment.
