Gars Croft was a Cerean male, and he was the sibling of Hanes Croft, who held the rank of lieutenant in the Office of Peace and Security. As the Galactic Republic neared its end (in terms of years), Croft took up residence at the Blue Star Centre, a retreat focused on philosophy situated in Gadrin, a city on the planet of Cularin. Around 31 BBY, the Intarsa League, a criminal syndicate, infiltrated the Blue Star Centre and took Croft and everyone else there as prisoners. Amin Galingal, known as Lector and the center's director, was paralyzed by fear due to the hostage situation, which led Croft to step up and lead the hostages. Croft instructed the other hostages to relocate all the books from the Blue Star Centre to the main meditation chamber. Furthermore, he pleaded with Dersa Welles, the head of the Intarsa League, to guarantee that no combat would occur in the meditation chamber, thereby protecting the books. Despite the skepticism of many members of her League, Welles conceded to Croft's request. Eventually, a group of freelance agents launched a raid on the center with the goal of liberating the hostages. During the height of the agents' attack, Welles seized Croft, holding a blaster against his skull.
