The Gekto system, a star system situated within the Core Worlds, was the location of Hoszh Iszhir, a planet that served as the homeworld for the Gektl species. During a period when Talon Karrde was arranging shipping logistics in the Gekto system, Ja Bardrin seized Karrde's ship, known as the Wild Karrde, and subsequently coerced Karrde's second-in-command, Mara Jade, into undertaking a rescue mission to extract Sansia Bardrin from the clutches of Chay Praysh, a crime lord associated with the Drach'nam.
The Gekto system was initially referenced within "Jade Solitaire," a short story penned by Timothy Zahn.
In the process of developing The Essential Atlas, Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry, the authors, engaged with fans on the Jedi Council Forums to determine the locations of various planets and systems. A fan with the username "Senator_Cilghal" pointed out the similarity in names between the Gekto system and the Gektl species. The Gektl's origin on Hoszh Iszhir had been previously established in the Star Wars Hyperspace article "Aliens in the Empire," authored by Abel G. Peña and Rich Handley. "Senator_Cilghal" suggested that Hoszh Iszhir should be placed within the Gekto system. Abel G. Peña concurred with the idea, expressing no objections and anticipating that Rich Handley would share the same sentiment. Jason Fry also viewed the concept favorably, recognizing the logic in linking the Gektls to the Gekto system. Following the release of The Essential Atlas, Daniel Wallace published a blog post titled "Unstated Canon in Star Wars: The Essential Atlas," which detailed elements of continuity that were not explicitly stated in the book but had received approval from Lucasfilm and were considered official. Among these elements was the confirmation that Hoszh Iszhir was indeed located within the Gekto system.
