Glory (Imperial-class)

The Glory, a vessel of the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer type, achieved notoriety as the flagship serving Grand Admiral Demetrius Zaarin.

History

During its initial operational period, the Galactic Empire primarily deployed it in raids targeting suspected contraband outposts, including the headquarters of Galactic Electronics. This company, which produced the mag pulse warhead, was targeted for allegedly selling its technology to the Rebel Alliance.

When Grand Admiral Zaarin initiated his failed coup against Emperor Palpatine, the Glory continued to function as his flagship. The Glory's presence in a battle following Zaarin's betrayal became a signature of the rogue admiral, signaling his direct involvement and a tendency to withdraw before significant engagement. The Glory made a few battle appearances, including the attempted capture of the Emperor, where it sustained considerable damage from loyalist forces commanded by Maarek Stele, and overseeing the destruction of the TIE Defender research facility located in the Parmel system.

While operating in the Outer Rim, Zaarin successfully maintained a stalemate with his rival, then Admiral Thrawn, keeping his flagship unharmed for several months. This was complicated by Zaarin's strategy of using smaller ships or hyperdrive-equipped starfighters for attacks.

Thrawn, recognizing the need for a different approach to force Zaarin's hand, exploited his adversary's over-reliance on technology. Thrawn engineered a new starfighter known as the Missile Boat, designed not only to counter Zaarin's TIE Defenders but also to police an attempt to proliferate them by Nami Pirates under the command of Crime Lord Ali Tarrak. Once the Missile Boat proved its effectiveness, Thrawn used convoys carrying the fighters as bait to lure Zaarin into a trap. After the first attempt at Serenity failed due to the convoy being a decoy, Thrawn opted to use a genuine convoy to draw Zaarin out. However, Thrawn underestimated Zaarin, who ambushed the most critical element of Thrawn's plan: the Interdictor Whirlwind [/article/whirlwind_(immobilizer_418_cruiser)]. Although Maarek Stele managed to save the Whirlwind using a Missile Boat, the cruiser suffered damage and fell significantly behind schedule, leading Zaarin to launch a strike force earlier than anticipated. Stele once again managed to protect the missile convoy from Zaarin, who arrived aboard the Glory in an attempt to seize the shipment, accompanied by the Nebulon-B frigate Thinin and the Carrack-class light cruiser Yaai. This attempt, however, was unsuccessful, and only the Glory escaped unscathed.

Shortly thereafter, Zaarin discovered the Vorknkx Project, aimed at developing a cloaking device for ships, which had successfully cloaked a Corellian corvette bearing the same name. He dispatched a strike force to attack and secure the project. Following its failure, Thrawn realized that the project's testbed could serve as bait to entice Zaarin once more. The strategy proved effective, and Zaarin brought the Glory into danger to retrieve the prototype technology from To-phalion Base, an exhausted Asteroid Hanger. Despite initially succeeding in capturing the project's corvette, Thrawn managed to track him into hyperspace using a tracking device planted in the corvette. As the loyalist Imperials arrived with overwhelming forces, including the Interdictor Corvus, the Glory was destroyed under intense fire. Zaarin escaped in the corvette Vorknkx, unaware of the device's instability when used in conjunction with hyperdrive engines, causing the corvette to explode upon activation during hyperspace entry.
