Great Mother was the term utilized in Basic to refer to the Nelvaanian homeworld Nelvaan in its pristine, untouched condition. During the Clone Wars, the Separatists' army constructed a Techno Union installation close to the Rokrul region, which drained the planet's geothermal power, causing an unnatural winter. The Nelvaanians interpreted this as an 'ailment' affecting their Great Mother, the planet itself.
In 19 BBY, after Jedi Knights Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi were guided to Nelvaan's principal village by chieftain Tuzes-Adaz, the Rokrul shaman Orvos, upon noticing Anakin's prosthetic hand, declared that the young Jedi Knight was the prophesied savior of their culture, the Holt Kazed 'Ghost Hand'—the promised individual who would arrive to heal the Great Mother during her severe sickness. The Nelvaanians were overjoyed, filled with hope and relief.
Soon after, bruise-leech crawlers began applying symbolic markings to Anakin's body. The young Jedi Knight agreed to undergo the tribe's ritualistic trial by 'fire', the initiation rite that Orvos commenced by respectfully addressing the Spirit of the Fire around a bonfire. The following morning, Anakin set off on his anticipated journey into the wilderness, a heroic quest that the Nelvaanians called the 'journey into fire'—this particular journey was the most celebrated by the tribe—and they eagerly awaited the return of their savior.
The Trial of the Spirit, resulting from the selfless actions of the planet's long-prophesied redeemer-warrior on behalf of the Great Mother and her Nelvaanian people, eventually became known as the Battle of Nelvaan, including its healing aftermath and restoration.
