Orvos

Orvos, an aged shaman, resided in the village of Rokrul on Nelvaan, a planet situated in the Outer Rim. This was during the concluding years of the Galactic Republic. As the [Clone Wars](/article/clone_wars/legends] raged between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems neared their end, Orvos played a role in aiding Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Master, and Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight. He did so by indirectly communicating the presence of the Techno Union, whose actions were devastating the planet. Furthermore, the shaman foretold that Skywalker, possessing a cybernetic arm, was the Holt Kazed, or "Ghost Hand," who would ultimately rescue the Nelvaanian people. Subsequently, he tasked Skywalker with a solitary mission to retrieve the male villagers who had been taken captive by the Techno Union.

Biography

Orvos, a Nelvaanian male individual, originated from the planet of Nelvaan, found within the Koobi system of the Outer Rim Territories. During the galaxy-spanning conflict of the Clone Wars fought between the Galactic Republic and the dissenting Confederacy of Independent Systems, he served as the shaman for the village of Rokrul. Several years before 19 BBY, the Clone Wars' final year, Orvos foresaw an impending ice age for Nelvaan. This prediction materialized when the Techno Union, aligned with the Confederacy, established a laboratory powered by a siphon generator. This generator extracted thermal energy from the environment, leading to a significant drop in global temperatures. However, despite Orvos's foretelling, the winter's severity and persistence greatly surprised the villagers. The Nelvaanians dispatched their male warriors and scouts to uncover the cause of the cold, but none returned. Even Orvos lacked an explanation for their disappearance. Nevertheless, he did foresee two men arriving on Nelvaan and uncovering the root cause of their predicament.

In 19 BBY, Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, and his Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, landed on the planet in their search for the Separatist General Grievous. Following an encounter with a dangerous horax and an interruption of the coming-of-age ceremony of Tuzes-Adaz's son, the chieftain, Tuzes-Adaz, brought the Jedi to the village to meet Orvos. Later that night, Orvos, alongside the Jedi and the villagers, gathered around a campfire as the shaman attempted to communicate with the Spirit of the Fire. After interpreting a sign from the smoke, Orvos concluded that Skywalker was the prophesied Holt Kazed, or "Ghost Hand," destined to liberate the villagers from their frozen misery.

Orvos then prepared Skywalker for his trek through the wilderness by applying bruise-leech crawlers to create a rectangular tattoo across his chest. He instructed Skywalker on how to heal the "Great Mother," the Nelvaanian term for their planet, by directing him to follow "the path of her frozen tears to where her inner flame had languished." Regrettably, Orvos withheld a crucial part of the story, omitting the detail that the "Ghost Hand" would eventually consume Skywalker, blocking out the light, and destroy all his loved ones, for he felt the Great Mother needed Skywalker's strength no matter the consequences. Skywalker proceeded to locate the Nelvaanian men (captured by General Grievous for Separatist mutation), destroy the Techno Union lab, and bring the men back to their village. The shaman and the villagers eagerly awaited his return, and after some initial hesitation, the tribe's warriors were overjoyed to be reunited.

Personality and traits

Orvos possessed a deeply spiritual nature as a Nelvaanian. He held unwavering faith in the Nelvaanian deities, such as the Spirit of the Fire and the Great Mother, and demonstrated great concern for the latter's well-being. Furthermore, the shaman demonstrated the ability to accurately predict future events, with at least two of his prophecies coming to fruition during the Clone Wars.

Behind the scenes

In The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, the article on Tuzes-Adaz refers to the shaman as both "Orvos" and "Ovros," with the latter spelling being unique to that source.
