The New Republic Historical Council, which was later known as the Historical Council of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, functioned as the historical research arm within both the New Republic and the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, also overseeing standards and values. Research teams within the organization were dedicated to recovering lost information pertaining to locations such as Obroa-skai, Toola, Dathomir (most likely from the Chu'unthor), the remnants of the Great Jedi Library and Mount Tantiss, the Imperial Information Center, and Jedi Holocrons in the possession of the New Jedi Order. A possible relationship existed between it and the History Section.
One of its responsibilities under the New Republic was the creation of a historical chronicle detailing the history of the galaxy, which was ultimately released in 25 ABY. Subsequently, it was assigned the task of producing a second edition of this chronicle following the Yuuzhan Vong War, which saw publication in 36 ABY.
Additionally, the Historical Council officially established and popularized the Battle of Yavin as the point of origin for the calendar. Tionne Solusar's instructional guide to the Force adhered to this standard.
Voren Na'al, who previously served as Director of New Republic Council Research and Assistant Historian for the Republic, held the title of Archivist emeritus within the Council.
