This brief comic narrates the encounter of a wampa with an unsuspecting Imperial viper probe droid. The wampa was in the midst of hunting tauntauns on the icy planet of Hoth.

Plot summary

The captured Viper probe droid hangs in the wampa's ice cave.

A wampa driven by hunger, is depicted as it stalks a group of at least five tauntauns. These tauntauns are shown grazing on lichen close to one of Hoth's frozen lakes. The wampa gets ready to attack, and then jumps forward, aiming to seize a tauntaun. Instead, it unexpectedly collides with an Imperial probe droid. Following a short confrontation involving blasters against claws, the wampa emerges victorious over the probe droid and carries it back to its cave. The droid is later seen suspended upside-down inside the icy cave, positioned above the skeletal remains of the wampa's previous meals.

Development

The "Hoth" comic initially appeared in Star Wars Tales 5 by Dark Horse Comics, which was made available on September 27, 2000. Subsequently, it was compiled into Star Wars Tales Volume 2, which saw publication on May 1, 2002. The two-page comic was both penned and illustrated by Tony Millionaire, marking his initial venture into the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Michelle Madsen provided the colors, and Phil Amara served as the editor.

The comic's ending, where the wampa suspends the probe droid in its cave, is reminiscent of how the wampa captures Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.

Continuity

Due to "Hoth" being published in an edition of Star Wars Tales prior to issue 21, the story's canonicity was initially uncertain. However, the events depicted in "Hoth" were later alluded to and further developed in The Official Star Wars Fact File 51, thereby establishing the story as fully canonical. As per the Fact File, scientists affiliated with the University of Sanbra later found the probe droid within the wampa's cave. They utilized the recordings extracted from its memory to gain insights into the behavior patterns of these ice-dwelling creatures.
