The Impavid served as a Star Destroyer within the Galactic Republic's naval forces during the Clone Wars conflict against the Separatist Alliance. It had a full contingent of clone troopers aboard. During 19 BBY, the Impavid took part in the defense mounted by the Republic to protect the government capital world of Coruscant located in the Core Worlds. This defense was in response to an unprecedented attack led by Kaleesh Separatist General Grievous with the objective of capturing Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine. During that particular engagement, several clone troopers from the Star Destroyer, under the command of Jedi General Saesee Tiin, were deployed from the warship to seize the Confederacy's Providence-class Dreadnought, named Prosperous, which ultimately led to its capture.
The initial mention of the Impavid in the new Star Wars canon occurred within the fifty-eighth issue of De Agostini's Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine, which was released around February 10, 2016. Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Impavid was originally presented as a Venator-class Star Destroyer in the twenty-third episode of the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series, which was broadcast on March 26, 2005. Subsequently, it was identified in the StarWars.com Databank entry dedicated to Saesee Tiin.
