Imperial Marines
Imperial Marines functioned as a specialized form of stormtrooper, primarily stationed on board Imperial-class Star Destroyers as a defensive force under the command of the Stormtrooper Corps. These troopers received specialized training from the Galactic Empire to execute boarding operations on rebel warships. They were considered the offensive striking power, or "the punch," of the Imperial Starfleet.
Overview
Standard equipment for Imperial Marines included an E-11 blaster rifle, a MiniMag shoulder-launched proton torpedo launcher, alongside several thermal detonators. To force entry into enemy vessels, they also made use of cutting lasers and explosive charges. Additionally, they could carry smoke pellets and flash grenades. Typically, they formed the initial boarding wave when capturing enemy starships.
History
The Imperial Marines represented a distinct specialization within the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps, serving actively from the aftermath of the Clone Wars through the Galactic Civil War. Their role mirrored that of the earlier clone marines within the Grand Army of the Republic. The Empire deployed Imperial Marines as Imperial shock troopers to safeguard capital ships, notably including Imperial-class Star Destroyers. Moreover, they engaged in the sabotage or seizure of Rebel capital ships, after being transported to them during space engagements.

During the Reconquest of the Rim, which occurred soon after the Galactic Empire's establishment, a number of marines served under the command of Darth Vader. At some point between 17 BBY and 12 BBY, Imperial Marines from the 501st Legion participated in the Battle of Mustafar against the Separatist holdout led by the Geonosian engineer Gizor Dellso. In the course of this battle, an HMP droid gunship managed to board the 501st's Star Destroyer, deploying several Droid marines and battle droid pilots, but these were ultimately driven back by the Imperial Marines.
Nova Stihl held the rank of Guard Sergeant within the Imperial Marines before he perished during the Battle of Yavin. Shortly after the Battle of Yavin, Imperial marines were stationed in the Fakir sector.
Behind the scenes
The initial appearance of Imperial Marines was in Star Wars Missions 4: Destroy the Liquidator. In the 2005 LucasArts video game Star Wars: Battlefront II, Imperial Marines are featured as a playable class during space battles in the Imperial campaign, as well as during Galactic Conquest and space skirmish missions. In Battlefront II, their role in space combat differs from that of Pilots; they are not able to repair ships, and instead are intended for rapid boarding maneuvers.
The strategy guide for the 2001 video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, titled Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, erroneously claims that General Veers commanded the Imperial Marines during the Battle of Hoth.
