The Inquisitions were essentially specialized religious tribunals, or courts, established around 11,100 BBY by the Galactic Republic under the control of the Pius Dea. Their purpose was to identify so-called impure elements, encompassing heretics and apostates, who were then subjected to mass trials and executions. Those dissidents who were labeled as Proscribed had their civil rights revoked, their possessions seized by the government, and their opportunities for social advancement severely restricted. Furthermore, the Pius Dea faction deployed commissars within Republic military units with the aim of eradicating any opposition to their ideology.
These Inquisitions were geographically limited to the Republic's primary territories, namely the Core Worlds and the Colonies. As a result of these actions, the Caamasi successfully convinced the Jedi Order to abandon their centuries-long policy of Recusal and directly confront the Pius Dea. The Jedi, in collaboration with the Caamasi and the Alsakani, disseminated a heretical doctrine within the Pius Dea church, which subsequently evolved into the Renunciate movement by 10,967 BBY. This coalition against the Pius Dea, which eventually included the Hutts, Herglics, and Duros, formulated a plan to seize control of both the Republic and the Galactic Senate, as well as to remove the Pius Dea Supreme Chancellor from power; these objectives were ultimately achieved during the Seventh Alsakan Conflict.
