The Royal Palace situated in Iziz served as the residence for the Royal Family of Onderon throughout the city's existence. It accommodated numerous governing bodies as control of the city shifted over the centuries. Although it faced destruction and subsequent reconstruction multiple times due to conflicts and wars, the Palace consistently stood at the heart of the city, perched atop a hill overlooking the residential areas and public squares of Iziz. By the time of the third Galactic War, the Palace had been transformed into the Unifar Temple. However, the original structure was reinstated at some point before Operation Shadow Hand.
The Royal Palace, a substantial stone edifice, was erected in the center of Iziz, a walled city, positioned on a prominent hill that provided a view of the entire urban landscape. Featuring towering walls and a central rotunda, the palace was designed as a stronghold to defend against attacks and protect the Royal Family. The entrance to the palace was located on the southern wall, accessible via the Sky Ramp. This massive ramp, constructed from stone and steel, ascended from the city's starport and culminated at the palace gates. Within the uppermost levels of the palace was the Royal Throne Room, an elongated hall with windows, serving as the location for the throne and the Council chamber of Onderon. It was in this chamber that the Monarch and the Iziz Council convened to discuss and address the political and economic challenges confronting the city.
The palace underwent significant transformations over the course of its history. Progressively situated lower on the hill, the palace evolved into a structure that prioritized defense over height. The Sky Ramp was heavily fortified, featuring ray shields and automated turrets, while the throne room was relocated to the palace's rear. The palace also housed a museum documenting the city's history, as well as a garrison for the Onderonian military.
The Royal Palace was constructed around 5200 BBY by the people of Onderon upon the establishment of Iziz. It functioned as both the residence of the Royal Family and the central hub for the Onderonian government's political activities. During the Beast Wars, the Royal Palace was under the control of the Naddist regime, a holdover from the reign of Dark Lord Freedon Nadd. Under the rule of King Ommin and Queen Amanoa, Iziz experienced economic hardship, and the Beast Riders inhabiting the jungles grew in strength. During one of their assaults on the city, a Rider riding a drexl breached the palace windows during a Royal Court session. The Rider was subsequently killed by Jedi Knights Tott Doneeta, Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma. The palace was attacked again before the war ended. Queen Amanoa died within the palace halls when Jedi Master Arca Jeth's strength in the light side of the Force expelled the dark side from her body.
The Naddists regained control of the palace when King Ommin reappeared, kidnapping Master Jeth and forcing King Oron Kira out of the palace. With the recapture of the palace and the death of Ommin, the city enjoyed a period of peace and economic prosperity. The palace underwent remodeling before the Jedi Civil War, becoming the home of Queen Talia and her court. During the Onderon Civil War, when her cousin launched a coup, the palace sustained damage but was later restored.
By the era of the third Galactic War, the Royal Palace had been replaced by the Unifar Temple, a new structure occupying the same location. The Sky Ramp leading to the palace was demolished, and Yolahn Square was constructed in its place, serving as a public plaza connecting to the city's Merchant Quarter and the southern gates.
Nevertheless, the original palace was reconstructed sometime before Operation Shadow Hand, replacing the Unifar Temple.
