Jang Li-Li

Jang Li-Li was a Jedi Knight of the Human female persuasion, who also held the rank of Jedi General during the tumultuous Clone Wars. Her early years involved extensive training under the tutelage of numerous Masters at the esteemed Jedi Temple, with Dooku among them. Li-Li's life ended tragically when her starfighter met its doom at the hands of Asajj Ventress, a Dark Jedi aligned with the Confederate forces. Ventress, in a grim act, sifted through the wreckage, discovering Li-Li's severed hand tightly gripping the scorched hilt of her lightsaber. This grim trophy, along with the lightsaber, was presented to Count Dooku, the Head of State leading the Confederacy. Dooku, lamenting her demise, dispatched Li-Li's lightsaber to Yoda, the Jedi Grand Master, concealing a holorecorder within. The holographic message contained Dooku's request for a meeting with Yoda on the planet of Vjun, with the intent of discussing a potential ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.

Biography

Early life

During the twilight years of the Galactic Republic, Jang Li-Li, a Human female, distinguished herself as a Jedi Knight. In her formative years, she received training at the Jedi Temple situated on the planet of Coruscant. She was among the many younglings that received guidance from Dooku who served as a Jedi Master. During her time at the temple, Li-Li developed a close bond with fellow trainee Politrix.

Her inaugural assignment as a fully fledged Jedi involved a diplomatic mission to Sevarcos, prompting her to seek counsel from her mentor, Dooku, recognized as one of the Order's most formidable and insightful Jedi, prior to her departure. Dooku viewed her as a promising young woman, destined for a successful future.

The Clone Wars

Asajj Ventress, the Dark Jedi who killed Jang Li-Li

As the Clone Wars raged on, the Jedi assumed leadership of the clone troopers comprising the Grand Army of the Republic, with Li-Li serving as a Jedi General. Shortly before embarking on a mission, Li-Li shared kitchen duties with her fellow Jedi, Maks Leem. In 19 BBY, while piloting her starfighter through deep-space, Li-Li's vessel was struck by a blast from Asajj Ventress, a Dark Jedi allied with the Confederate, piloting her personal starfighter Last Call, resulting in a catastrophic explosion that led to Li-Li's death.

Driven by the desire to claim a trophy from her sixteenth Jedi kill, Ventress spent hours scouring the debris field, eventually discovering Li-Li's severed hand clutching the damaged hilt of her lightsaber. Ventress presented this grim prize to Count Dooku, the leader of the Confederacy. Dooku expressed sorrow at her passing, noting the positive impact Li-Li had on the lives of many. Enclosing the remnants of Li-Li's lightsaber within an incendiary packet, Dooku dispatched a Troxan diplomat to deliver it personally to Yoda, the Jedi Order's Grand Master.

Upon arriving on Coruscant, the Troxan diplomat was initially denied entry to the temple by Whie Malreaux, a youngling on sentry duty. Malreaux resolved the situation by summoning his Master, Leem, who employed the Force to pacify the agitated diplomat and assured him of her personal delivery of the packet. She found the Grand Master in the Room of a Thousand Fountains, deep in meditation, and upon opening the packet, Yoda recognized Li-Li's lightsaber and mourned her loss. Leem expressed her hope that Li-Li had become one with the Force, finding peace and freedom.

After Leem's departure, Yoda activated the lightsaber, triggering a holorecording of Dooku requesting a meeting on the planet Vjun to discuss a potential ceasefire. Considering Dooku's proposal, Yoda returned to his meditation, recalling a memory of an eight-year-old Li-Li playfully creating rainbows in the room with a mister.

Personality and traits

Dooku remembered Jang Li-Li as a striking young woman characterized by her distinctive and unwavering gray eyes. In her youth, Li-Li possessed a carefree demeanor, expressing joy and excitement when creating rainbows with a plant mister. In her final moments, Li-Li's immediate reaction was to reach for her lightsaber, a behavior Ventress found unusual, attributing it to the Jedi's ingrained instincts.

Jang Li-Li also possessed a sense of humor. During her last stay at the Temple, she was assigned to kitchen duty with Jedi Maks Leem. While preparing vegetables for dinner, Li-Li playfully inquired whether using the Force (telekinesis) to shell Antarian peas would constitute an abuse of power.

Powers and abilities

Having undergone Jedi training since childhood at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, Jang Li-Li was adept at wielding the Force. Even during her first diplomatic mission, she impressed Dooku, who was regarded as one of the most exceptional Jedi of the time. He believed that Li-Li possessed immense potential and was destined for success as a Jedi. Li-Li was also a skilled pilot.

Equipment

Upon becoming a Jedi Knight, Jang Li-Li constructed a lightsaber powered by a blue crystal. Following her death, Dooku modified her damaged lightsaber by incorporating a holorecorder to transmit a private message to Yoda.

Behind the scenes

Jang Li-Li was a character conceived by author Sean Stewart for the 2004 novel Yoda: Dark Rendezvous. In the novel, Dooku recalled Li-Li having gray eyes, while Maks Leem remembered them as almond-colored.

According to Li-Li's entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, published in 2008, she accompanied Jedi Master Jai Maruk on a mission to Vjun to investigate the buildup of Separatist forces in the sector. However, in the novel, Maruk's debriefing report to the Jedi High Council stated that he was alone on his mission. This article assumes that the novel version is correct, since Li-Li's encyclopedia entry also stated that she was captured by Asajj Ventress and later engaged the Dark Jedi in single combat, whereas in the novel, only Maruk fought and was later captured by Ventress, and Li-Li was killed when Ventress vaporized her ship.
