Jango Fett: Open Seasons #2 represents the second installment in the Star Wars: Jango Fett: Open Seasons comic book series, having been made available on June 17, 2002.
In the second issue of "Open Seasons," a limited series that uncovers the past of the infamous bounty hunter, a young Jango Fett finds himself in a perilous situation, stranded behind enemy lines. Relentlessly pursued by the sinister Death Watch, Fett and his team are forced to embark on one of their most treacherous missions, where the possibility of casualties looms large.
The True Mandalorians organized themselves into three distinct units: Vertigo Squad, an aerial assault unit commanded by Montross; Headhunter Squad, a unit specializing in heavy cleanup operations under the leadership of Jaster Mereel; and Jango's Grunts, a basic infantry and security unit led by Jango Fett. This marked Fett's inaugural appointment as a squad leader.
The True Mandalorians departed from their carrier ship above Korda 6 aboard Meteor-class Q-Carriers. The initial indication of impending danger arose when they encountered ion cannon fire during their descent, resulting in the destruction of one carrier, causing the death of all occupants, and the disabling of at least one other carrier. As the surviving members regrouped, they were subjected to intense and coordinated blaster fire from the Kordans, catching the Mandalorians off guard and resulting in significant losses. Jaster is shot and injured.
Mereel issued an order for Vertigo Squad to cease their assault on the Kordan gun emplacements, but Montross defied the command, leading his squad into heavy fire. He survived only because Mereel's forces intervened to provide assistance. Fett capitalized on the aerial assault as a distraction, leading his squad to rescue the besieged Korda Defense Force training squad, only to be ambushed by a Death Squad unit. When Vizsla appeared on the battlefield, Montross betrayed Jaster, whom he had been protecting, in an attempt to seize the title of Mandalore. This betrayal left Jaster vulnerable to attack, resulting in his death.
Fett retrieved Jaster's body, pulling him to safety behind friendly lines. Montross also managed to return and survive the retreat.
