Jango Fett: Open Seasons #1 represents the inaugural issue of the Star Wars: Jango Fett: Open Seasons comic book series, hitting shelves on May 1 of 2002.
Jango Fett, recognized across the galaxy as a master bounty hunter, inspires both fear and respect. However, his path wasn't always that of a bounty hunter. He originated as a simple farm boy dwelling on the Outer Rim. Tragedy struck when the Death Watch, a criminal mercenary group, murdered his family. Subsequently, Jango joined ranks with the elite Mandalore Warriors, a group of soldiers who presented him with an opportunity for vengeance! Open Seasons delves deeply into the background of one of the most captivating new characters introduced in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Written by Haden Blackman of LucasArts fame (Starfighter: Crossbones) and brought to life through the illustrations of Ramón F. Bachs (Star Wars: Jedi vs. Sith) Jango Fett–Open Seasons is a series that promises to be unforgettable!
The narrative commences with Count Dooku in conversation with his master, Darth Sidious, discussing the merits of Jango Fett, a bounty hunter, as an ideal clone donor due to his proven success against the most formidable mercenaries. Dooku then recounts the story of Jango's transformation into a Mandalorian. The story transitions to a flashback, depicting the Mandalorian Civil War on Concord Dawn, where the Death Watch, under the leadership of Vizsla, clashes with the True Mandalorians, commanded by Jaster Mereel. The True Mandalorians suffer defeat and are dispersed. Days later, Jaster and his soldiers encounter the Fetts. Jango's father offers them food, cautioning his son that they are merely beggars. Regrettably, the Death Watch, in pursuit of the True Mandalorians, discovers their location and murders the family. However, Jango manages to escape alongside Jaster and his men. Vizsla's forces then set fire to the fields where Jaster, Jango, and the Mandalorians are concealed. Jango guides them to an irrigation tube, enabling them to evade the flames. Following their escape, the Mandalorians devise a plan to ambush the Death Watch in town. The Death Watch, seemingly victorious, prepares for rest and relaxation when the Mandalorians launch their ambush, annihilating the Death Watch. In the aftermath of the battle, Jaster welcomes Jango into the ranks of the Mandalorians.
