John Wagner, born on July 18, 1949, works as a freelance writer in the comic book industry.
He's well-known as the co-creator of Judge Dredd for the comic anthology 2000 AD, and also for authoring the graphic novel A History of Violence.
Wagner has also contributed to the Star Wars universe, writing several comic books for Dark Horse Comics. When working on Star Wars projects, Wagner feels that the characters are already well-established, making it straightforward to assign them appropriate roles.
Ryder Windham was an admirer of Wagner's work, particularly the Batman/Judge Dredd: Judgment on Gotham crossover, and personally selected him for the Shadows of the Empire comic series. Wagner prefers not to work from pre-existing synopses, believing the story can "get stale." The Shadows script began as an outline by Steve Perry; however, he felt it expanded and improved due to feedback from Lucasfilm.
During the 1990s, Wagner resided in a Tudor village located outside of London. The house he lived in, constructed during the reign of Henry VIII (and rumored to be haunted), made appearances in some of his comic book creations.
