Joseph, a Bardottan who belonged to the Bahk-tov Council, experienced capture by the Frangawl Cult amidst the Clone Wars. He found himself confined within a metallic enclosure, suspended several meters over a sizable lava filled chasm. Subsequently, Jar Jar Binks was also taken prisoner and placed in similar circumstances, close to Joseph, prompting Jar Jar to inquire about their troubling situation.
Jonathan W. Rinzler conceived the character of Joseph, bestowing upon him a name inspired by mythologist Joseph Campbell. Campbell's mythological theories had a notable impact on George Lucas during the creation of the Star Wars saga.
