Jova Tarkin, originating from the planet of Eriadu, was a male human. As a member of the esteemed Tarkin family, he held the position of paternal grand-uncle to the infamous Wilhuff Tarkin.
During his younger years, Jova Tarkin was subjected to the traditional trial of his family within the harsh landscape of the Carrion Plateau on his homeworld, Eriadu. The purpose of this ordeal was to instill in selected male members of the Tarkin lineage the significance of their family's legacy and the imperative to enforce their established order upon others, resorting to force if necessary. The Carrion served as a reminder to the Tarkins of Eriadu's state before their ancestors journeyed from the Core to colonize their world, illustrating that "life remained a constant battle for survival."
Upon completion of his initiation, Jova made the surprising choice to remain in the Carrion, establishing it as his permanent residence and becoming a guide and instructor for future Tarkin initiates. This decision marked him as the first in the Tarkin lineage to opt for a life in the Carrion, where he constructed his own cabin. In this role, Jova eventually trained both his nephew and his grand-nephew, Wilhuff, when the time arrived for their respective initiations.
Jova Tarkin made his initial appearance in the 2014 novel titled Tarkin, penned by James Luceno. Luceno drew inspiration for the character from various individuals he encountered during his travels to Africa and the Americas, notably a Belizean from Guatemala whom Luceno accompanied on hunting expeditions and extended walks through a forest. This individual would use his machete to kill any animal they encountered, regardless of whether it was dangerous, warning Luceno that if he left potential enemies alive and lurking, he might one day find himself with fangs in his throat.
