Kreetle

A burrowing, parasitic arthropod, the kreetle is endemic to Tatooine and frequently inhabited metropolitan areas, dwellings, and other developed environments.

Biology and appearance

A kreetle found on Kashyyyk

This parasitic creature possessed five pairs of appendages, a robust reddish-brown exoskeleton, and prominent mandibles. Kreetles flourished by consuming refuse and discarded vegetables, and they were often located within the abandoned dens of profogg.

Behavior

Kreetles were typically found in the vicinity of cities.

Despite their diminutive stature, kreetles exhibited aggressive behavior, although they generally posed a minimal threat to travelers within the expansive cities they had colonized nearby. Overkreetles represented an exceptionally large and aggressive variant, though they were less prevalent and seldom encountered in close proximity to cities.

Originally from Naboo, kreetles were subsequently transported to its moon, Ohma-D'un. The Gungans utilized kreetles as tools for cracking nuts, and also consumed them as a palatable snack.

Tatooine is another location where they are naturally found.

Kreetles subsisted on flesh, regardless of whether it was living or deceased. They launched attacks in groups ranging from four to five individuals, delivering a bite before retreating and then advancing for another. These organisms maintained a symbiotic relationship with slaatik hagworms within the Lianorm Swamp.

Kreetles in the galaxy

During the period of the Clone Wars, kreetles could be observed on both Geonosis and Kashyyyk.

The term "kreetle" occasionally functioned as a derogatory epithet.

History

Following the Battle of Yavin, Entha Kandela, an Animal Control officer, assigned a spacer the task of eradicating kreetles in the vicinity of Mos Eisley to prevent their burrowing activities from compromising the structural integrity of the surrounding soil.

Behind the scenes

Kreetles have been featured in a number of Star Wars video games, with their initial appearance occurring in Star Wars Episode I: The Gungan Frontier, a tie-in to Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.

Despite the assertion that kreetles possess five pairs of legs, their representation in Star Wars: Republic Commando depicts them with only three pairs.

Within the established canon, kreetles, although not formally identified, are visible alongside other creatures such as gorgs at Ronto Roasters within the Black Spire Outpost.
