Kru-kru represented a specific variety of crop that originated on the swamp planet known as Safrifa. To prevent their roots from becoming saturated with marshwater, this crop was cultivated in floating beds made from mud and plant life. Throughout the High Republic Era, Safrifan swamp farmers grew this crop extensively on expansive farms that spanned several kilometers, maintaining a network of plots delineated by willow supports and encircled by canals.
In the year 231 BBY, the mercenary named Ty Yorrick made her way through a section of one of Safrifa's kru-kru farms during a visit. She was struck by the Safrifans' ability to cultivate what she perceived as challenging terrain, inwardly praising their inventiveness.
The novel The High Republic: The Rising Storm, penned by Cavan Scott as part of Phase I of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project, featured kru-kru. This novel was released on June 29, 2021. Before the novel's debut, StarWars.com included a reference to the plant in a preview of the novel on April 22 of that year.
