Ty Yorrick

Ty Yorrick, originally named Tylera Yorrick, was a Tholothian female who possessed Force-sensitivity and worked as both a monster hunter and a lightsaber-wielding mercenary during the High Republic Era. Yorrick, a former Jedi Padawan, chose to leave the Jedi Order and pursue a career as a mercenary, even joining a group under the leadership of Caratoo for a period. Her path crossed with the Jedi once more when she arrived at the Republic Fair on Valo, where she was employed as a bodyguard for Mantessa and Klerin Chekkat.

Biography

Training on Alaris Prime

During the High Republic Era, Tylera Yorrick, a Tholothian strong in the Force, lived her early life. As a youngling, she was brought into the Jedi Order and eventually became a Padawan, studying under Jedi Master Cibaba of the Azumel order, who instructed her in the construction of her own lightsaber. She also formed a bond with another Padawan, Klias Teradine, with whom she resided on Alaris Prime alongside her master. During a training session, Teradine commented that she was too reserved and needed to be more assertive, like him. She then surprised him by sweeping his legs, causing him to fall. Later, Teradine convinced Yorrick to accompany him to a Yallow Fellowship sanctuary on Mount Bikja. As they were departing, Yorrick guided Teradine into a side passage to avoid a Jedi. Holding hands, the two padawans then set off to climb the mountain.

During their ascent, Teradine confided in Yorrick that his intention was to uncover the secrets of the Yallow in order to enhance his Jedi abilities through study. When Yorrick lost her footing and began to fall, Teradine saved her by securing himself to the mountainside using a Force technique he learned from the Sabracci Sages. They completed their climb and entered the shrine. Yorrick prevented Teradine from being impaled after he triggered a trap. Inside the shrine, Teradine discovered artifacts, including a Yallow soothsaber and a vitalicron. Yorrick tried to persuade her friend to leave the artifacts, warning him of the dangers and ethical implications of taking them. Teradine examined the vitalicron, and when it unlocked in his hands, he was exposed to its contents. He was then possessed by the Yallow and attacked Yorrick. Despite her attempts to help him, she was ultimately forced to kill him. Following this tragic event, Tylera left the Jedi Order.

Being a monster hunter

Yorrick working as a monster hunter

After becoming known as Ty Yorrick, she eventually transitioned to mercenary work, joining a group led by the Kerk Caratoo, whom she later killed due to his betrayal. For nearly a decade, she worked as a monster hunter, earning the title "Saber for Hire." At one point, a Weequay severed one of her head-tendrils using a knife.

In 232 BBY, the Drengir, a species of sentient carnivorous plants with a hunger for flesh, emerged from a long period of dormancy. Initially, Yorrick dismissed the reports with laughter. However, while hunting a batarikan snake on Galidraan, she discovered that her prey was infested with a root system, changing her perspective. The realization that many locals had also been killed by the Drengir meant she wasn't paid for the job, much to the disappointment of her droid, KL-03.

Mission to Blarrum

Three months before the scheduled Valo Republic Fair, Yorrick undertook a mission on Blarrum that brought her closer to the Jedi than she had been in a long time. Yorrick journeyed to Blarrum, where Triv Blago hired her to capture a gundark. During the fight, the beast knocked Yorrick away. She landed in a clearing, where she encountered a young Segredo who had been following her. Unfortunately, the gundark attacked, and Yorrick was forced to kill it to protect the youth. She returned to Kul Kenada Spaceport, where she noticed two Jedi. Avoiding them, she met with Blago and presented him with the gundark's severed head. Enraged, he confronted her, stating that he had hired her to capture the creature alive. Before their argument could escalate, the Jedi arrived to arrest Blago. Blago's gang opened fire on the Jedi, and Yorrick created a diversion to escape. Blago pursued her, but she knocked him to the ground. She fled on her speeder as the beast-trader was apprehended. She boarded her ship and departed the planet.

Hunting an monster on Loreth

Once in space, KL-03 informed her that the ship was in dire need of repairs and upgrades, advising her to find another paying job. She presented her with two options, and Yorrick used her Verazeen stones to decide which one to accept. The stones directed her to the job on Loreth. She landed on the planet and was greeted by Layton Wyke. He introduced her to his colleague, Tapel, and explained that their colony was under attack by a gretalax. While she considered taking the job, Wyke's niece, Pela, knocked her down. Wyke explained that Pela had been injured in the gretalax attack when she was exposed to rhydonium fumes. Standing up, Yorrick used the Varazeen stones to determine whether she should accept the job. She ultimately agreed and mounted a lyuna to take her to the summit of Temple Peak.

During her ascent, Yorrick sensed someone's presence. She located the individual and pursued them into a spider web. A Rock Weaver emerged from a cave and approached Yorrick. The rock weaver shot webbing at Yorrick's face, blinding and suffocating her. She recalled her Jedi training, where her master taught her how to use the Force to tame an animal. Unable to connect with the rock weaver, she managed to scare it away by causing an avalanche. KL-03 communicated with her over the comlink, informing her that rock weaver webbing could be removed with sound waves. The droid advised her to use her sonic cutter at level three. Yorrick successfully removed the webbing from her face and then used it to free the individual she had detected earlier. The unknown person was freed but remained invisible. Yorrick trapped them with a bolo and demanded that they reveal themselves. She discovered that it was the Segredo child from Blarrum who had stowed away on her ship. He introduced himself as Drewen Qweebjillan and explained that he was following Yorrick because he wanted to be trained as a Jedi. She refused and sent him back down the mountain alone. Yorrick changed her mind and found Drewen. She allowed him to camp with her overnight but insisted that he leave in the morning. As she set up camp, he shared his life story with her. Later that night, the lyuna became frightened and ran off. Yorrick awoke and sensed someone approaching. She was attacked again by Pela, who drew a blaster and fired at her. She deflected the blast with her lightsaber, but it ricocheted back towards Pela. The girl was startled and fell off the cliff. Yorrick attempted to catch her using the Force but was unable to save her. She sat on the edge of the cliff and mourned her failure to save the girl. The next morning, Drewen began to leave, but Yorrick told him he could stay, mainly because the lyuna had run off and she needed someone to carry the supplies.

The pair continued their climb up the mountain, searching for the monster's lair. Yorrick lost her footing and fell off the path, but she saved herself by jamming her lightsaber hilt into the mountainside. She grabbed Drewen's hand and pulled him across a chasm, joining him on the other side. They arrived at the lair, and Yorrick gave Drewen a glowrod but refused to provide him with a weapon. Deeper in the cave, they were attacked by the gretalax. Yorrick attempted to bond with the gretalax to calm it down but was thrown aside, losing her lightsaber. She tried to evade the attacks and summon the lightsaber back to her hand. Despite the difficulty, she succeeded, but it caused the cave floor to collapse, dropping her and the gretalax into a pit. She and the beast were trapped under rubble, and Yorrick found herself surrounded by rock weavers. They didn't attack but instead began to help clear the debris, freeing her. Drewn jumped down with her saber and confronted the spiders, but Yorrick stopped him when she realized that the gretalax was controlling them. She took her saber from Drewen, warning him that no-one was allowed to touch it. She again attempted to bond with the gretalax and was surprised when the creature initiated the bond itself. She was able to see its memories of the attack on Wyke Town and realize the truth that the gretalax had not been the aggressor.

Yorrick returned to Wyke Town, where she confronted Wyke about his capture of the lax, which had provoked the greta to attack in an attempt to free its partner. While talking to Wyke, Tapel stunned her. Wyke hung her above a large shredder and revealed his plan to crush the gretalax horns to create a potion that would grant his group power. He decided to use Yorrick's body as a substitute, but she revealed that she had a group of rock weavers who attacked the settlers, allowing Drewen to retrieve Yorrick's lightsaber from Wyke and return it to the monster hunter. She freed herself from the chains and destroyed the shredding machine. She chased down Wyke and forced him to confess his crimes. KL-03 broadcast the confession to the entire settlement, causing Wyke to be humiliated and lose his position. Yorrick returned to see the gretalax reunite and use their Force healing ability on each other and then Pela. She decided to leave Loreth and gave her Verazeen stones to Drewen, telling him that she would start to make her own decisions. She told Drewen that she preferred to work alone and left him with Pela and the other settlers. As she flew away, KL-03 suggested that she could have brought Drewen with them, but Yorrick didn't want to discuss it. She went to the back of the ship and trained with several training remotes.

Safrifa

Later, on Safrifa, Yorrick successfully rescued the son of a local marsh-lord from a rival clan. Having been paid in novian ore, she planned to visit an armorer on Keldooine who could turn the ore into new saw blades. While she reminisced about a botched job on Alzoc III after repairing her ship, she was approached by local Safrifan farmers, who complimented her ship. They asked for its name, and Ty replied that it didn't have one, as she didn't like forming attachments with things that couldn't get attached to her. The farmers offered her novian ore, explaining that a monster was destroying their crops and killing their children. They said that they had been laying traps for the past three weeks, but the monster had destroyed them. Yorrick asked the farmers where she could find the monster, them saying that it lived in the Sorcan Swamp, a three days' hike from her ship. Despite feeling that the job wasn't worth it, Ty decided to help the farmers.

The monster terrorizing the Safrifan farmers turned out to be a Drengir, which eventually managed to drag Ty towards its mouth. As she struggled to break free, Ty reflected on the growing Drengir crisis. Having initially dismissed the Drengir, Ty eventually realized how dangerous they were, especially after hearing rumors that entire worlds had fallen to them. Ty also reflected on her time spent with Caratoo, who had taught her to define her limits. Ty only hunted sentient life-forms if they were trying to kill her, and she decided that the Drengir qualified. She pushed it with the Force, knowing that it wouldn't kill it. While still pushing, she eventually freed herself by snapping the vines that had hold of her.

As the Drengir attempted to overwhelm her mind, Ty leapt onto a tree branch. While Ty hung upside-down, the Drengir latched onto the branch, trying to break it. Ty then reached out with the Force in an attempt to find her weapon, which she eventually found beneath the Drengir and tried to call to her. As the Drengir latched onto both her wrists, Ty was able to ignite her lightsaber. She used the Force to control the blade, slicing the Drengir in two. But the branch broke, and Ty fell to the ground. Since Drengir could regenerate from even the tiniest piece, Ty cut the Drengir into strips so she could burn them. Even though she knew it would be a long process, Ty was determined to uphold her promise to the farmers.

Ty returned to the Safrifan village and received her payment. A Kuranu then approached her and introduced herself as Mantessa Chekkat, before asking for her help.

Valo

Mantessa and her daughter Klerin Chekkat hired Yorrick as protection for their attendance at the Republic Fair on Valo. Their goal was to sell a recainium-powered four-seven nullifier prototype, a device designed to disrupt energy weapons such as blasters and lightsabers, to Senator [Tia Toon] for his Defense Force Program. During their journey to the fair, Klerin flirted with Yorrick while playing with the large bangle on her wrist. Despite Klerin being the inventor of the nullifier, Mantessa presented herself as the inventor during their meeting with Senator Toon.

Although Toon rejected the device due to its use of recainium, Mantessa asked Yorrick to activate her lightsaber for a demonstration. However, Toon's secretary and bodyguard misinterpreted this as an attack and began firing. To make matters worse, Jedi Master Stellan Gios entered the room after hearing the blaster fire and ordered her to drop her lightsaber. When Jedi Master Elzar Mann and Padawan Bell Zettifar suddenly appeared, Yorrick acted swiftly and attacked Gios, engaging him in lightsaber combat before defeating him by headbutting him with her skullcap. Mann then engaged her in combat with his lightsaber, but she anticipated his move and fought him as well. She kicked him against the wall and stabbed him with her lightsaber. However, Chekkat's nullifier activated at that precise moment, deactivating Yorrick's lightsaber before it could stab Mann. Chekkat was pleased with the demonstration, but Toon refused to purchase the device and summoned Valo Security officers to arrest Yorrick and Chekkat for bringing recainium onto the world. Master Mann also confiscated Yorrick's lightsaber for 'study', which Yorrick said she'd eventually need back.

Yorrick and Chekkat were imprisoned together on Valo. During the Nihil marauders attack on the Valo Republic Fair, the two escaped with the help of Jedi Padawan Ram Jomaram, who had been wrongly imprisoned in a neighboring cell. After using a Mind trick to stop the first marauder that broke into the prison, she and Jomaram used the Force to overwhelm the remaining raiders. Yorrick then used the Force to grab a blaster that the raiders had dropped. She used the blaster to kill a Nihil raider who was about to shoot Jomaram, before shooting the prison control panel and releasing them. In the chaos that followed, Yorrick and Chekkat were separated as Chekkat fled for her life.

Yorrick encountered Elzar Mann during the battle. She attacked him with a Nihil mace and demanded the return of her lightsaber. He gave the weapon back to her, asking for her help fighting the Nihil. Yorrick initially refused, but then used her saber to save Mann from a hragscythe that had escaped from the Lonisa City Zoo. The two of them joined minds through the Force, and then tamed a pair of escaped sanvals, using them to help fight the Nihil.

Soon afterward, she found herself fighting alongside the Jedi to defeat the Nihil raiders during the attack on Valo, later joining the Battle of Grizal in a failed effort to wipe out the pirates.

Occlusion

After the Destruction of Starlight Beacon, Yorrick found herself trapped within the Nihil's Occlusion Zone. On one occasion, after hearing tales of monsters affecting the Jedi, Yorrick recounted to KL-03 the story of her master's master, Coron Solstus, encountering the Nameless, creatures that preyed on Force-sensitives, and a cult transporting them called the Path of the Open Hand. KL-03 used this story to convince Yorrick to join up again with Drewen and make him her apprentice.

Personality and traits

Ty Yorrick was a female Tholothian who had dark skin and light-colored head-tendrils, which she kept away from her face with a brown crown adorned with a few cranial jewels. Due to the trauma surrounding her departure from the Jedi Order, she avoided its members and disliked discussing the events that led to her leaving. She used to be very superstitious, relying on Verazeen stones to make all of her decisions. Yorrick could also be quite skeptical, initially reacting to reports of the Drengir's emergence with mockery at the idea of "plant monsters" running amok.

Yorrick protecting Drewen

When Yorrick noticed that Klerin Chekkat seemed to have a crush on her, she might have considered exploring a possible connection if the circumstances were different. However, Chekkat's relationship as the daughter of her unpredictable client made it unwise. Nevertheless, she flirted with Chekkat to try to get more information about the job. Later, when she shared Elzar Mann's intimate memories of Avar Kriss through the Force, she felt attraction and teased Mann by clarifying that it was not towards him as he was not her type.

Despite her given name being Tylera and only going by Ty, Yorrick insisted that she did not "do" nicknames.

Powers and abilities

Ty Yorrick was skilled in using her Force powers, especially telekinesis, mind tricks, force speed and lightsaber combat.

Equipment

Ty Yorrick possessed a purple-bladed lightsaber, a starship that she refused to name, and two droids: the admin unit KL-03 and the astromech droid R0-VR. She wore blue clothing and a golden headdress.

Behind the scenes

Concept art of Ty Yorrick

Ty Yorrick's character was conceived by author Cavan Scott for the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project. Her initial appearance was simultaneous in Scott's novel The High Republic: The Rising Storm and Daniel José Older's junior novel The High Republic: Race to Crashpoint Tower on June 29, 2021. In Race to Crashpoint Tower, the character's surname was misspelled as "Yorrik." Before her debut, Yorrick was first depicted on the cover of The Rising Storm in a StarWars.com article on December 4, 2020 that revealed the book's title. Following the article's release, Scott confirmed on Twitter that the Tholothian female on the book's cover was indeed Yorrick. Her full name, "Tylera," was later revealed in the first issue of the comic miniseries Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures — The Monster of Temple Peak, written by Scott and published by IDW Publishing on August 11, 2021.
