The Kurluvion system existed within the Weneen sector, which itself was part of the New Territories region of the Outer Rim Territories.
In the year 0 BBY, inside Chalmun's Cantina located in the Mos Eisley settlement on the planet Tatooine (situated in the Outer Rim's Arkanis sector), a Snivvian approached Han Solo, a Human smuggler. This Snivvian claimed the inhabitants of the Kurluvion system had a strong desire to view holographic pornography featuring the Hutt species, and sought to engage Solo to transport a shipment of this material to the system overnight. Solo, however, declined the proposition, stating that smuggling Hutt holoporn went against his personal code.

The comic story "Smuggler's Blues," penned by the Fillbach Brothers, first made mention of the Kurluvion system. This story appeared in the fourteenth edition of the Star Wars Tales comic book series from Dark Horse Comics, which was released on December 11 of 2002. The first through twentieth issue of Star Wars Tales contained stories considered S-canon until a non-Tales source referenced them, at which point the subject matter gained C-canon status. The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, authored by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry, provided the first C-canon reference to the star system and placed it in grid square N-6.
