The forthcoming movie Lando, also known as Star Wars: Lando, will center its narrative on Lando Calrissian. Donald Glover, the actor who portrays Lando, will collaborate with his brother, Stephen Glover, to craft the storyline. Initially revealed on December 10, 2020, the project was first conceived as a show for Disney+, but its format was subsequently changed to a feature film.
Lucasfilm Ltd. made an announcement on December 10, 2020, regarding the development of a Star Wars series for Disney+ that would revolve around Landonis Balthazar Calrissian, with Justin Simien serving as the writer and showrunner. In an interview with Cinemablend at Celebration Anaheim on May 26, 2022, Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that the series was in a state of pause, awaiting Donald Glover's completion of other commitments. On July 18, 2023, The Direct released an interview with Simien, where he admitted to not having received any updates concerning the series since 2020. He confessed, "I have no idea what's going on" with the show.
Reports surfaced on July 27, 2023, indicating that Simien had departed from the project due to his obligations with Haunted Mansion, and that Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover would take over as writers and showrunners for the series, with Glover reprising his role as Lando. Earlier that day, Simien had told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview that he believed he was "still attached" to the series. He mentioned being informed that the executives "loved" his writing, but production had to be paused due to scheduling issues. However, he also questioned whether he had been secretly dismissed, asking, "Am I too Black? Am I too queer? And people just don't want to say that?"
On September 14, 2023, Lucasfilm officially verified that the project was being developed as a film, instead of a TV show. Stephen Glover had previously indicated that its status as a film, versus a series, was under consideration. On February 7, 2024, Donald Glover revealed that accepting Lando was not an "easy yes," and he agreed to it because of his affection for the characters and his children's enthusiasm for Star Wars. He also expressed his belief that the level of creative control he had allowed for a more "singular" vision for the film, which he felt would make it more appealing to audiences. On August 2, 2024, Simien reflected on his involvement with the project in an interview with Collider, stating that the version he was working on had been shelved; however, he clarified that he had not received direct confirmation of this decision. On September 12, 2024, Donald Glover voiced his hope that audiences would enjoy his film, expressing his desire for it to be more lighthearted and less serious compared to other Star Wars installments.
