Official description

Lando Calrissian, the beloved rogue, is set to make his return in a brand-new limited series created for Disney+. Justin Simien, the mind behind the critically-acclaimed Dear White People and a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast, is the one shaping the story.

Development

On the date of December 10, 2020, Lucasfilm Ltd. made the announcement that a Star Wars series focused on Landonis Balthazar Calrissian was being developed for Disney+, with Justin Simien as the writer and showrunner. During an interview with Cinemablend at Celebration Anaheim on May 26, 2022, Kathleen Kennedy commented that the series was stalled, as they were awaiting Donald Glover to complete his other commitments first. On July 18, 2023, The Direct released an interview with Simien, where he disclosed that he hadn't received any updates regarding the series since 2020. He expressed, "I have no idea what's going on" with the production.

On July 27, 2023, reports emerged that Simien had departed from the project due to his obligations with Haunted Mansion, and that Donald Glover, along with his brother Stephen Glover, would be taking over as writers and showrunners for the series, with Glover also reprising his role as Lando. Earlier that day, in an interview published by The Hollywood Reporter, Simien had mentioned that he believed he was "still attached, I think" to the series. He mentioned being told that the executives "loved" his writing, but production was paused to address availability issues. However, he also questioned whether he had been discreetly dismissed, wondering "Am I too Black? Am I too queer? And people just don't want to say that?"

On September 14, 2023, Lucasfilm officially verified that the project's development had transitioned from a television series to a feature film. Stephen Glover had previously indicated that the possibility of it being a film, rather than a series, was under consideration. On February 7, 2024, Donald Glover revealed that accepting the Lando project wasn't an immediate decision, and he ultimately agreed due to his affection for the characters and his children's enthusiasm for Star Wars. He also expressed that the level of creative freedom he was granted would allow for a more "singular" vision for the film, which he believed would make it more appealing to audiences. On August 2, 2024, Simien reflected on his involvement with the project in an interview with Collider, stating that the version he was working on had been shelved; however, he also noted that he hadn't been directly informed of this decision. On September 12, 2024, Donald Glover voiced his hope that everyone will enjoy his film, expressing his desire for it to be more lighthearted and less serious compared to other Star Wars productions.
