Lieutenant Lowen Chase, a human male pilot of starfighters, served the New Republic Defense Force. During 6 ABY, he was taken prisoner by forces under the command of Moff Kentor Sarne and subsequently tortured. After conventional methods proved ineffective, he was relocated to the penal colony located at the Q'Maere Research Facility on the planet Q'Maere, with his status officially changed to "terminated".
Under the guidance of Doctor Langstyn Kraay, Chase underwent an intensive program of psychological breakdown and mental torture. Despite this, Chase successfully resisted the procedures, maintaining his core personality. However, he began to exhibit signs of a schizoid personality, developing both paranoia and egomania. In 8 ABY, Sarne significantly reduced the staff and military presence at the facility, leading Kraay to transfer Chase into the general prison population, effectively ending the interrogation sessions.
Chase's inherent leadership abilities and charisma enabled him to organize the prisoners, and he started formulating an escape strategy. He also encountered Corla Unser, another prisoner, and they developed romantic feelings for each other. However, given their circumstances, they decided to postpone their relationship until they had achieved freedom.
A few weeks after Sarne's reduction of the facility's personnel, a new group of prisoners arrived—a landing party from the New Republic ship [FarStar](/article/farstar]. Chase interrogated them, carefully assessing their responses to determine if they were genuine members of the New Republic or spies dispatched by Kraay. Once convinced of their authenticity, Chase guided them to the catatonic form of Captain Keleman Ciro, recognizing the mission patch on their uniforms as being identical to one on Ciro's clothing.
Chase revealed his escape plan to the FarStar landing party, and they refined it, incorporating their own ideas and expertise to maximize its chances of success. After successfully escaping from the prison block, Chase led the prisoners in seizing control of the entire facility. With the outpost secured, Chase volunteered to join the crew of the FarStar.
Chase was a courageous, charming, direct, and honorable member of the New Republic. As a natural leader, he was also pragmatic and initially harbored suspicions towards the FarStar arrivals, believing they might be spies sent by Kraay.
Nevertheless, the effects of his mental interrogation began to manifest, resulting in paranoid behavior and occasional bursts of egomania.
