Plot summary

We are introduced by the narrator to Luke Skywalker, who is on his way to Dagobah for the purpose of Jedi instruction. Luke, accompanied by R2-D2, pilots his X-wing and lands it amidst the murky swamps that characterize Dagobah.

Later on, Luke is seen carrying Yoda, his Master, on his back within a backpack, during which Yoda elucidates that the Force serves as his ally, emphasizing its immense power. He clarifies to Luke that the Force constitutes a potent energy field enveloping and illuminating all. Yoda then encourages Skywalker to perceive the Force that surrounds him, so that he might achieve freedom. As they journey, they encounter a swamp slug and then pass by a gnarltree.

Subsequently, Skywalker declares his intention to attempt to raise his X-wing from its submerged position in the swamp. Yoda retorts by stating that "try" is not applicable, and that one must either "do or do not." Skywalker makes an attempt to lift his X-wing out of the water, yet he is unable to prevent its continued descent into the swamp's depths. Luke expresses his belief that Yoda is requesting something impossible and subsequently departs. However, Yoda employs the Force to successfully raise the X-wing out of the swamp, leaving Skywalker and R2-D2 in a state of astonishment.

As Luke practices levitating R2-D2 and several rocks, Yoda informs Luke that the Force grants him visions of numerous things and locations, encompassing the future, the past, and even long-lost friends. Luke then experiences a Force vision depicting Han Solo, Leia Organa, Chewbacca, and C-3PO held captive by Darth Vader within a city in the clouds, which causes Luke to lose focus and drop both R2-D2 and the rocks.

Yoda urges Luke to see his Jedi training through to completion, but Skywalker is unable to dismiss the vision from his thoughts. Luke voices his refusal to abandon his friends Han and Leia, convinced that their survival hinges on his intervention. As Luke boards his X-wing, Yoda cautions him about the peril posed by Vader and advises him to remember the lessons he has imparted. Luke pledges to retain his teachings and to return, before taking off from Dagobah.
