Around 6 BBY, Jyn Erso embarked on a lone assignment to the world of Horuz; her objective was to murder Dorin Bell, an Imperial researcher. Jyn believed Saw Gerrera had given her this task to commemorate her fifteenth birthday. Furthermore, she believed that Staven played a role in persuading Gerrera to entrust her with the job, especially after her misstep with a detonator kit during Gerrera's evaluation. Erso's equipment consisted solely of her weapon: a customized long-range blaster rifle with a sniper scope and an extra power cell to supercharge the plasma.
While traveling to Horuz, Staven provided Jyn with details about the landscape, the landing zone, and the meeting place. Jyn got to Bell's small transport unit several hours ahead of schedule. Upon his arrival, land mines Gerrera had pre-planned for caused his death. Jyn experienced a mix of guilt and thankfulness that she wasn't the one who ended Bell's life.
