During the Disciples of Ragnos conflict, in 14 ABY, Jedi Knight Jaden Korr and Jedi Master Kyle Katarn undertook a particular operation.
As the New Jedi Order mobilized all available forces to confront the Disciples of Ragnos on Korriban, Kyle Katarn informed Jaden Korr that he had picked up a distress signal from Rosh Penin, who claimed to be held against his will on Taspir III. Korr expressed doubt, given Penin's fall to the dark side, suspecting a trap, but he still consented to assist Katarn.
The pair of Jedi arrived at an Imperial smelting facility situated on the desolate, lava-covered terrain of Taspir III. Katarn strategically positioned Korr at the plant's rear entrance, while he piloted the Raven's Claw to approach via a different entry point. Korr advanced through the complex, ascending the towering structures, traversing treacherous bridges, avoiding hazardous lava streams, and eliminating numerous Imperial soldiers and New Reborn forces along his path. Ultimately, he encountered the Dark Jedi Alora, who mocked him before fleeing. Korr gave chase through the facility, navigating perilous assembly lines and industrial machinery. As the pursuit unfolded, Korr's frustration and anger intensified, bringing him dangerously close to succumbing to the dark side.
Alora eventually guided him to Penin, whom Korr angrily confronted. Alora goaded him to murder Penin, believing he would be a powerful ally if turned. Katarn, located elsewhere in the plant, employed the Force to communicate telepathically with Korr, urging him to resist the temptation. Korr relinquished his anger, deactivated his lightsaber, and sought forgiveness from Penin. Alora, enraged by this, engaged Korr in combat, severing Penin's arm during the fight. After a prolonged and fierce battle, Korr succeeded in defeating and killing Alora. Katarn arrived, realizing Penin required immediate medical attention. He carried the unconscious Penin away, commending Korr for making the correct decision. The two Jedi then separated, with Korr proceeding to Korriban to aid the Jedi strike force in their fight against the Disciples of Ragnos and the Imperial Remnant.
Within the context of the Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy game, players are presented with a choice between the light and dark paths of the Force. In the non-canonical, dark side ending, the player, as Korr, inflicts a mortal wound upon Penin, subsequently rejecting the Disciples of Ragnos and slaying Alora. Following Korr's departure, Katarn discovers Penin, who expresses regret that both of Katarn's students had disappointed him. Before succumbing to death, Penin receives reassurance from Katarn that he had indeed become a Jedi. Katarn then departs in pursuit of Korr.
