Mutated Geonosians represented a subspecies of the Geonosian species. Darth Malora engineered them prior to the new conflict that arose between the reconstituted Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic.
Around 3628 BBY, Darth Malora created the mutant Geonosians. These beings were crafted from a blend of several species—Geonosians, Acklays, Killiks, and Melitto—through a combination of genetic engineering and Sith alchemy. The original Geonosians utilized in these experiments were obtained either as adult slaves or in egg/larval stages from a clandestine group of Hutt gluttons.
These insectoids were intentionally designed to function as self-sufficient warriors, proving difficult to eliminate. They possessed thick armored carapaces, a rapid [reproduction](/article/reproduction-legends] cycle, and enhanced sensory abilities. While the mutated Geonosians experienced an increase in physical strength, they largely lost their sentience, retaining only enough to effectively wield light weaponry such as blasters and vibroblades.
Darth Malora deployed the Mutated Geonosians during the Invasion of Ossus against the Jedi Order's colony. However, they eventually went rogue, launching attacks against both the Sith Empire's forces, the Jedi, and Republic reinforcements.
The Mutated Geonosians then established their nest within the mountains, operating under the leadership of the Mutated Geonosian queen.
