The Neo-Crusader light armor served as a type of Mandalorian armor utilized throughout the time of the Old Sith Wars. Because it was the armor most frequently seen on Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders during the Mandalorian Wars, it eventually gained the simple designation of Neo-Crusader armor.
Constructed from Mandalorian iron, the Neo-Crusader light armor provided full-body protection. Weighing in at 42 kg, it was still considered a light armor option by Mandalorian standards. This was particularly evident when compared to the Neo-Crusader assault armor, a more advanced variant of the light armor specifically engineered for elite shock troopers. The Neo-Crusader light armor offered enhancements over earlier armor designs, most notably increased strength and resilience. The light armor incorporated a helmet equipped with an integrated comlink and the capability to attach a jetpack. The suit was sealed, containing a ten-hour supply of breathable air for operation in vacuum or hostile environments. Furthermore, it featured stealth field generators enabling the wearer to evade detection by enemy forces.

The near uniformity of Neo-Crusader light armors stemmed from the consolidation and standardization of the Mandalorian military during the Mandalorian Wars. This initially sparked controversy among some Mandalorian Crusaders accustomed to the unique and highly personalized armors of the Great Sith War. However, as the Mandalorians expanded their reach across the galaxy during the Mandalorian Wars, modifications were implemented to the original design, initially tailored for Humans, to accommodate the diverse species joining the Neo-Crusaders.

The armor eventually appeared in three distinct colors, each signifying a specific rank within the Neo-Crusader ranks. Standard soldiers wore blue, crimson was reserved for Rally Masters, and gold denoted the rank of Field Marshals. Exceptions existed for veterans, frontline troops, and specialized units like the Mandalorian Knights, who often sported silver/grey Neo-Crusader light armor.
Before the Mandalorian Wars, the Mandalorian combat suit was the armor of choice for Mandalorians. This lighter armor model saw use early in the Mandalorian Wars, alongside the traditional Crusader armor worn by Mandalorian Crusaders during the Great Sith War. At that time, Neo-Crusader armor was still in the developmental phase. Later, with the rise of the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders, who overtook the Crusaders within Mandalorian society, nearly all other armor types were discarded during the Mandalorian Wars.

By 3963 BBY, Mandalorian warriors were almost exclusively equipped with Neo-Crusader light armor. This shift towards a single armor model was initiated by Mandalore the Ultimate, who unified the Mandalorians into a highly efficient fighting force based on recommendations from Cassus Fett, who was also rumored to be involved in war production. As the Mandalorian Wars progressed, the populations of conquered worlds were invited to join the Neo-Crusaders. Those who refused were forced to labor in the War Forges established on numerous captured planets, producing armor and weaponry for the new Mandalorian recruits.
The Mandalorian Neo-Crusader army was ultimately dissolved following the Mandalorian defeat at the Battle of Malachor and the conclusion of the Mandalorian Wars. However, most Mandalorian survivors retained their armor, and the Neo-Crusader light armor remained the most prevalent armor type among Mandalorians for decades afterward. The Neo-Crusader light armor became a common sight among mercenaries, especially during the Jedi Civil War. During the Dark Wars, Mandalore the Preserver gathered loyal Mandalorian followers under his command. These Mandalorians were known for wearing Neo-Crusader light armor exclusively.

Three centuries later, the Mandalorian Hunter armor had emerged as the most frequently used armor type among Mandalorian warriors.
The design of the Neo-Crusader armor later served as inspiration for the armor worn by the Republic Senate Guards. During the Clone Wars, millennia after the Mandalorian Wars, a Neo-Crusader helmet was kept by the Trandoshan bounty hunter Garnac within his collection of trophies.
