Its purpose was to diminish the artifacts' inherent and unpredictable dark influence. When the resin encased these items, Jedi were shielded from sensing the dark side energy they emitted. Numerous artifacts within the Sanctum of the Exalted located on Odryn were treated with this resin, such as Ludo Kressh's pedicure set along with Exar Kun's lightsaber. It is known that the resin existed in, at least, three different grades or levels of potency.
