Octusi

The Octusi, a species of limited sentience as classified by some, inhabited the planet of Blaudu Sextus. They were native to Blaudu Octus in the Regulan system. On Blaudu Sextus, they were forced into slavery by the planet's mining colony inhabitants. A freedom march took place in 44 ABY, organized by the enslaved Octusi. Wynn Dorvan informed Natasi Daala, the Galactic Alliance Chief of State, of this march. Daala, through her Chief of Staff, responded by dispatching a brigade of Mandalorians to Blaudu Sextus with the intention of suppressing the march and preventing a widespread revolt.

Biology and appearance

The Octusi possessed a unique centauriform anatomy. Their upper body resembled that of an Ithorian, rising from the body of a shaggy, barrel-chested nerf. A thick coat of white fur covered their bodies, with a long, barrel-shaped abdomen connecting the front and rear portions of their bodies. Despite their somewhat bulky physique, the Octusi possessed a graceful quality, particularly in their broad, flat trunk, hinting at their peaceful nature. Their broad shoulders and hammer-shaped head were adorned with a gentle beauty horn.

History

The Octusi originated from the world of Blaudu Octus. They were generally peaceful, gentle, and adhered to rules, finding it difficult to comprehend that others might not share these traits. The Blauduns (hairless green bipeds with sunken eyes and long, dagger-thin noses), who colonized Blaudu Sextus, largely disputed the Octusi's sentience. The Octusi were generally considered to be only semi-sentient.

While the Octusi were able to use and comprehend nearly a hundred words, they lacked the ability to read or write. Their understanding of time was limited to the concepts of "now," "later," and "before." They were capable of using simple hand tools for digging and shaping stone, but they did not grasp the principles of levers or pulleys. The concept of money also remained a source of confusion for them.

The Blauduns, while owning the Octusi, generally treated them well, viewing them as working pets. Harvesting ships routinely traveled to Octus to acquire more Octusi laborers. The Octusi were escorted to their work sites each day, primarily because they tended to wander aimlessly otherwise. After completing their work, they were free to do as they pleased. However, due to the steep axial tilt of their home planet, the Octusi were constantly migrating in search of suitable grazing lands, a challenging lifestyle that rarely allowed them to live beyond twenty standard years. When an Octusi could no longer keep up with the migrating herd, the band would often seek out a harvesting ship from Sextus and request that the Blauduns take them in. Under the care of the Blauduns, the Octusi were known to live for as long as eighty years. The Octusi were also free to return to their homeworld of Octus to die if they wished.
