Oung Jmel, whose name signifies "Neck of the camel" in arabic (عنق الجمل, sometimes written as Angejmel or Ongh Djemel), is a rock formation situated close to the Chot el Gharsa salt lake in Tunisia. Historically recognized by local inhabitants due to its resemblance to a camel, it has recently gained prominence as a tourist destination because a number of movies have used it as a filming location. Notably, scenes were filmed at Oung Jmel for both Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. A brief sequence for the podrace was shot in close proximity to the rock. The area where Darth Maul landed and engaged in a short fight with Qui-Gon Jinn was also filmed nearby. Approximately one to two kilometers to the west of the rock, two set pieces were constructed. One smaller set was combined in post-production with Ksar Hadada to represent the backyard of the slave quarters, the location where Anakin Skywalker parked his podracer. An additional set, located 500 meters further to the west, served as the backdrop for numerous exterior scenes of Mos Espa. At the request of the Tunisian tourism board, these sets were intentionally preserved. A road originating from the neighboring town of Nefta, initially constructed for the filming of English Patient, now provides access to the site. To reach Oung Jmel, travel north from Nefta and look for a sign indicating "Site Touristiqu".
