Palm sugar

Palm sugar, named after the palm trees from which it originates, was a variety of sugar. No sooner than 379 BBY, Marda Ro, the Evereni who established the Nihil (a group of pirates), hosted a celebration on her starship, the Gaze Electric. For this event, an individual within Ro's organization prepared finger cakes, using ground palm sugar as frosting. Ro sampled one of these finger cakes during the feast.

Subsequently, Ro referenced palm sugar in a message intended for her descendants. By 252 BBY, Marchion Ro, her great-great-grandson, had, during his formative years, listened to her recorded memoirs, which included the passage mentioning the sweetener.

Behind the scenes

The short story "A Closed Fist Has No Claws," penned by Tessa Gratton, featured palm sugar in a flashback sequence. This story was included in the 2023 young-adult collection The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life, which is part of the larger Star Wars: The High Republic initiative. In the real world, palm sugar is a sweetener sourced from palm trees.
