American actress Pat Welsh provided the voice for Boushh in the film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.
Earlier in her career, she worked with Ben Burtt again, lending her voice to the main extraterrestrial character in the movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Welsh's voice became low-pitched because she had been a smoker of cigarettes since the 1930s.
Ben Burtt and she were neighbors, and he encountered her at a photo shop. On that particular day, she was at the front of the line, talking about her credit card with the clerk, and Burtt overheard her speaking. Shortly after that, Burtt approached her and asked her if she would "like to be an alien," to which she said yes. At the time, Burtt was having difficulty finding the right voice for the character, and Welsh agreed to accompany him to the studio, which was just down the street. Burtt recounts that following the success of E.T., she would answer phone calls using the same vocal inflections as the character, and she would also speak to groups of children in that voice.
For Jedi, Welsh delivered the lines for "Boushh," which included dialogue in Ubese that Burtt had created and then modified with electronic effects. Welsh also knew Kipsang Rotich, who was an exchange student at the time, and introduced him to Burtt. Rotich provided the Sullustese dialogue for Nien Nunb.
